I have owned this 940se turbo for about 3 years and it has always had what I believe excessive belt or bearing noise from the engine compartment. It has about 175K on now. I noticed the alternator belt has some cracks on the underside so I will replace all. I have some questions for the experts.
1. Will the possible bearing noise be easy to diagnose by installing one belt at a time to see when the possible bearing noise begins?
2. I tried the large screwdriver conduction to the bone in front of my ear trick to try to identify excessive internal noise but have no frame of reference. How much is too much mechanical noise?
3. Should I replace the timing belt at this time?
4. I noticed some coolant on top of the water pump when I topped off the coolant tank, the pump is cheap. Should I replace it also?
5. There are seals during a timing belt change, should I consider these too? Someone please stop me!!! How far to go?
Thanks for the advice.

1. That is one way to find out.
2. You have to know roughly what noise you are listening for , for this to be successful.
3. When was the timing belt last replaced? Recommended intervals are 50,000 miles or 5 years, whichever is first.
4. As you say the water pump is cheap. If it is suspect then change it before it becomes a major problem. Check carefully that this is the source of the coolant first.
5. It is not necessary to replace seals on 940 timing belt change. It is a straightforward job.
Bill.
