'06 XC70 whining noise at start up and shut down

Post by twoplanker »

Ok, thanks in advance for any input. This is my third Volvo, but first turbo so I'll have to get up to speed on the vernacular.

Recently, a new whining/whirring noise has become apparent on start up and after shut down. I have notice this in the past after shut down, but now it is more prevalent and louder than the main engine.

The car still runs strong with no apparent power loss and there are no error codes present.

Any insight on this would be appreciated.

To clarify, it seems that the turbo is noisier than it used to be. The cooling fan was on at start up and shut down and is not my concern. Here's a video link for those with a thought on this:

I hear some ticking, I'd check oil level and pressure.

Yeah, the ticking sound is amplified prob from vibration since I set the camera/phone on the body. In actuality it is not loud or pronounced, the turbo(?) whine is, though. Oil is good- full synthetic and recently changed.

No idea, but here's a thought, whens the last time you changed your air filter or what brand of filter are you using? Could be the restriction is causing the turbo to whine. If you want to test, remove your filter, make sure you air box is clean, close the lid and start the car, see if it changes. The other thing i would consider is vacuum leaks.

Good Luck

How's your AC blowing? Icy cold? Probably not.

I have an '06 XC70 with this noise last August. It sounded like a helicopter taking off. I took it to a quick lube shop and they topped up my AC with a can of refrigerant (I wouldn't recommend this option). Noise went away. 5 months later it came back. I took it too my independent who diagnosed a leaking evaporator. Replaced that, vacuumed the lines, oiled and refilled the AC with refrigerant to spec. Noise went away and has stayed away since.

Its not your turbo. It's the fan on high to protect your condenser from overheating due to low refrigerant (no gas flow) through it.

Goodluck.

You are correct sir! I did not put the two together. My evaporator had a leak. It has been replaced and the fan is now quiet. A humbling experience.
