Okay, I tried unplugging the MAF with the car off and the car will start and immediately die. With it plugged in, it will run, although rough.
My ETM is a yellow label model.
I think I need to purchase a Volvo compatible ODBII reader with the VIDA (I guess VADIS is old?) software for my car so I can diagnose better and run this test you mention. The generic bluetooth android ODBII reader I bought just isn't doing what I need. With the way the car is running, I cannot believe my reader doesn't show misfire or any codes after clearing them. Where is the best source to purchase this combo without breaking the bank? I seem to remember seeing someone post a link here to an ebay auction with the reader and a dvd for about $120 but I haven't found it searching yet.
Maybe this one but I am a little weary about the vendor's reputation 2014 DICE. It would be cool to turn off the annoying airbag light and to program my extra key and fob that don't work...
1999 s80 misfire no throttle response
I removed and cleaned the MAF, it wasn't bad at all. I removed and cleaned the ETM and it was pretty dirty with oily gunk. I changed the plugs and they were all pretty bad and fouled looking. I am not sure about the coils if they are bad or not. I see some hairline cracks in the plastic housings but I don't think that would affect the functionality? One coil had a torn boot at the top where it sits on the head, which I replaced. I will borrow a torque wrench tomorrow and torque the new plugs in and put it all back together and see if any of this made any difference and post a follow up.

Have you inspected the wiring harnesses for the O2 sensors? Check for breaks and wires burning through.
Also try measuring voltage or checking for continuity while moving the harness to check for partial breaks.
After that, it may be the ECU that has internal faults.
How old are your spark plugs and ignition coils? Those might be failing if you're misfiring under load. However it could still be related to O2 sensors and thus fueling.

I would definitely test the coils one at a time, and replace the ones with weak (yellow) or no spark. I'd fix the misfires first, the put in BONE STOCK plugs. None of those $9 iridium super plugs that Kids use in their Hondas with a wing on it.
Volvo calls for a specific platinum plug in an S80, and instead of fooling around I get exactly the right Bosch, NGK or just give up and buy them at the dealer.

I've re-used that gasket maybe 30-40 times while swapping throttle bodies on my 2000 v70 non turbo. They have a tin base and a quality rubberized gasket face.kosh_al wrote:$10.14 for a new throttle body gasket at the local Volvo Dealership. Looks like maybe a $1 part...

Okay I want to try to determine if any coils are bad but there are so many methods for testing listed on this site it is confusing me. Is there a fool-proof, sure fire, 100% correct method for this? I don't want to blindly spend $300 on all new coils if I don't need all 6 because saving money is the entire purpose of me doing the work myself. I am not sure about trial and error as the car runs so poorly now, I don't know if buying one coil and swapping one cylinder at a time would work (if I have more than one bad coil)? I am partially colorblind and not really sure how to check the spark "color" either (Oly_850), but I would be willing to try. Tips and pointers are appreciated.
I know Bosch is the recommended brand of coil but none of the regular parts stores in town carry Bosch. I would have to order them and wait another week and they only have 1 year warranty. O'Reilly Auto Parts carries a coil called "Import Direct" with a lifetime warranty and they are in stock today and only $1 more than Bosch (not including shipping charges for Bosch). There are a lot of opinions on keeping everything bone stock, I don't necessarily share that opinion for every part, i.e. spark plugs, xemodex ETM, climate control resistor and fan, tires/wheels, motor mounts, shocks/struts, etc., but if it really makes that much of a difference to have a coil with "Bosch" printed on it with a 1 year warranty vs. another one with a lifetime warranty if all specs are the same or better then I will wait to get a Bosch...
