Once a code is set, the CEL will turn on immediately. That would be the time to read the codes.

Here is a link for deciphering codes:
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/read-codes-volvo-850

I don't see anything pointing to the MAF in that list, but I would wait until it stumbles again then see what codes are stored.

In 1994 there were 2 versions of ECU's. There was a Fenix 5.2 system and a Motronic 4.3 system. A 1-2-2- code is a "intake air temperature sensor signal absent or faulty" on the Fenix system. The A 1-2-2 codes does NOT exist on the Motronic system. Not sure if this is the sensor that opens and closes the cold/hot air in the intake box? Based on that code number though, you definitely have an early 1994 model and I would venture to guess a base model. This could also be the european name for the air mass flow sensor. If you need one I can ship you one tomorrow, or if you are in the Chicagoland area you can swing by and pick it up.

^^ good stuff. I don't know much about the differences on the 94s.

Thanks for the info shaker_chi. I don't believe it is my MAF, however, given that a brand new Bosch one was installed in the car last September right before I bought it. I don't drive it much so have put maybe 5k miles on it since that time. Would there be any reason for it to go out so soon? Time for CRC MAF cleaner as a preventative maybe. Thoughts on checking and cleaning (if needed) the throttle body and IACV?

Excellent ideas, especially given that doing them costs so little. If nothing else, good preventive maintenance and you can cross them off the list.

I agree 100%, before you drop big money on a new MAF, there is specific Mass Air Flow sensor cleaner you can buy at any auto parts store. Clean it up first, then clean up all the electrical connections while you have it out. I had that code on my 1994 850 last week, but once cleared it didn't return. Good luck.
