Came across this as a patent from Volvo. It was filed Dec of 1992. If you look at the pictures, it look pretty close to an S60.

Didn't Volvo have some sort of S60/S80-looking alternative-fuel prototype car in the 1990's?

The Volvo ECC became the styling model for S80 and S60.
That car had some flavor of hybrid propulsion. I recall it was electric wheel motors and a high efficiency gasoline engine running a generator.
