2002 V70 Stalling on acceleration

Post by cyberwolf »

Our '02 V70 has suddenly developed a stalling issue over the past week or two. It only seems to happen when pulling away from a stop. It seems fine when idling or driving, but one out of every 20 or 30 starts it just quits. It then starts right up with no extra cranking.

I've been reading a lot of threads on stalling, but all seem to involve more issues than we're having. I'm off to replace spark plugs, check connections and clean the fuel system, but any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Your year came with infamous ETM by Magneti Marelli. If it's the culprit, Xemodex converts failed potentiometer-based angle sensor to magnetic one.

VIDA has ETM test, which shows if potentiometer is worn way too much, but you have to have DiCE scaner. Chinese copy works too.

I'd also check fuel pressure at the rail.

I haven't had much chance to work on this beyond new plugs and new fuel filter. I need to get the correct connections for my fuel pressure tester, as the current fuel pressure pops my current ones off. When I bought the car I remember the Volvo mechanic pointing out that the ETM had been replaced.

What I have noticed now is that I can replicate the stalling after it's warmed up by revving up to about 4k and then letting off the throttle. It dips down below 1k and then usually stalls.

The other thing I noticed while troubleshooting is that the battery is apparently getting bad, although I had it tested and it appeared good. After about 4 starts it doesn't have enough power and the solenoid just clicks. Could this have anything to do with stalling?

Just wondering where to look next. Thanks.

Yes, it could, to a good extent: Insufficient supply voltage combined with a dirty throttle (ETM) can cause lots of sloppy response.
I suggect you check your system voltage with the car off and when idling to rule out possible electrical issues. If you battery is old and you do change it, make sure your charging system is working fine.
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

I had this problem last week. I have a 2006 v70r. It was a cracked hose that went from the engine (right beside the oil cap) down to the oil can (Part Of The PCV system). It was hard plastic that had become brittle. In removing it, it broke into three or four pieces. interestingly, the replacement has gone back to the heater hose-type material. that fixed my stalling problem. While you are there check that the oil can is empty by putting a stick inside It. clean or replace if needed.

Thanks for all the help. The issue is resolved, but I can't say for sure which of two repairs fixed it.

I started checking vacuum lines and the line that runs from the right of the manifold to the solenoid valve (I think) broke off at first touch. I replaced that, but could not get the car started thanks to the aforementioned failing battery. In another test it showed full voltage, but less than 100 amps. Replaced the battery and she's running great with no stalls in the past few days.

So, one of those two fixed it. Pulling that vacuum line now causes an immediate stall, but I still can't eliminate the battery as the cause.
