1994 850 turbo: Should I bother?

Post by chax »

1994 850 turbo wagon w/159k miles
21k miles ago, in the summer of 2011, I had the head reconditioned, and installed all new seals, timing belt pulleys and tensioner: the entire head/tb componentry lot. A couple days ago, I resealed the oil pan, due to a leak, but since I wasn't sure the leak was from the pan exclusively, I removed the tb cover, and cam and crank pulleys, because there appeared to be some oil in that area. Turns out it's pretty dry under there, and that the oil got there by being thrown off of the CV joint boot, after having run down the axle shaft. Anyway, I had already bought new front cam and crank seals, and oil pump seals, assuming something'd be leaking, but since all the seals look good, I'm thinking I'll just leave them as-is. On the other hand, as long as it's that far disassembled, maybe I should go ahead. HOWEVER, I'd hate to damage any sealing surfaces doing unnecessary work. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Front cam seals I only replace if I have to. So far they have not leaked on me, the only times I have put in new ones was when the cam cover had to come off for one reason or another. If they aren't leaking, I'd leave them in, wait it out. Same for the oil pump and front crank seals.

Oh I am just realizing, are you saying the front cam seals were done in 2011? Absolutely leave them in. If they are crappy aftermarket they would have leaked by now, so those should have a bunch of leak-free years to go yet.

I was leaning towards leaving them, and saving the new seals for when, if ever, they're needed. Thanks for the input, folks!
