Torque spec need....99 V70

Post by DML »

1999 V70 Base
I need the torque spec for the rear spindle nut.
I have spent a lot of searching and this is the only info I could find.
Rear wheel bearing replacement.

Can anyone confirm the 175 ft/lbs .

Thanks

I read the post and my understanding was tighten to 88 ft/lbs then an 15 degrees. this should end at about 188ft/lbs.

When you stretch torque a nut or bolt there is no absolute equivalent torque specification. The torque spec is as specified - a torque wrench setting plus the angle after the torque number is achieved. The only requirement is that the nut and bolt threads should be clean and dry, not lubricated.

They make angle torque gauges but they are expensive so I tend to eyeball it, particularly when I'm dealing with large nuts or bolts that take my 3/4" drive socket set. It is fairly easy to estimate 30 degrees if you think of a clock face. If your wrench hits 88 ft lbs at the 2:00 position just continue until the wrench gets to the 3:00 position which is your additional 30 degrees.

I'm not a real big guy so on stuff like axle nuts I wind up using a 6 foot pipe for additional leverage.

Grease the threads on the 36mm nut and reinstall (Haynes recommends 88 ft/lbs and then 30 degrees further for the 24mm nut – I used a pointer style torque wrench for removal and it took 110 ft/lbs to remove the nut. I tightened to 88 ft/lbs and then was able to tighten the nut about 15 degrees further to 175 ft/lbs. I could not move the nut any further, I will update if this fails some day.

Thanks for the responses.
My application has the 36mm nut and Haynes is referring to a 26mm nut as stated above.
I just want to be sure of the torque value what ever it is.

Thanks

The size on the writeup may be wrong, the 26mm looks and sounds more accurate and the VADIS torque spec is 120 nm + 30 degrees. 120 nm = 88.5 ft lbs. VADIS is silent with respect to the size of the nut.

Alldata has a different report
Note! From chassis no:s. 854: 219646,855: 121429 a new drive shaft nut has been introduced on all versions of the 850, which means the following changes should be noted:

The nut is reusable
There is no locking groove in the drive shaft.
The threads on the shaft end have increased from M20 to M22.
New self-locking nut with M22 thread.
Note! The nut must be oiled before use.

The new nut must be tightened to the same torque and protractor angle as previously. 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs) + 60°.
120Nm plus 60 degrees is a hell of a lot of torque. You will need a pipe for that. That's for oiled threads too. After you set the pre torque, mark a corner if a bolt with a sharpie..moving the next bolt corner to that point is 60 degrees!

I use white out, the new one with the triangle sponge end. Wipe it fairly clean and put a small mark on the nut. When possible I use an old protractor like we used in math class to get my mark as accurate as possible.

I set up my mark on the nut so I finish at 12:00 or straight up. Best example I can think of is if you need 90 degree stretch. I would make a mark at 9:00. When mark hits 12:00, you should be good.
