So I just passed inspection and I get the car back and I don't start it for a day. It won't start on the first key turn. almost always starts on the 2nd turn and real rough, a lot of sputtering...sounds like lack of fuel. Is this a dirty injectoy? Bad fuel pump or check valve (not fun on an xc I've read)? Besides the fact I think it's a conspiracy, i have a year to fix, but I don't even want to start it.
Any advice on treatment is good. I will clean MAF and borrow a boost tester to look for air leak with engine off.
I just don't know which order to go in. I replaced plugs and air filter and CVVT solenoid (used) in the past 6 months
I guess next is O2 sensor front? I just put on new tires and replaced e brake cables myself and have about had it with this ride....it was running so well before I took it in

I would start with a fuel pressure gauge at the Schrader valve on the end of the fuel rail. After the car starts the pressure should be in the 43 PSI range and, after you turn the car off, it should hold pressure and not quickly fall to zero. There is a book spec for a specified pressure after a specified time period but I don't have it in front of me. I think it is something like 28 PSI after 20 minutes but when you have a check valve problem it falls much quicker than that.
Don't get hung up on absolute numbers since the quality of the gauges is all over the place. Plus or minus 10% is a reasonable range.

Well after more poking and prodding for an air leak, I found that the air distribution hose (3545307) had popped off near the radiator. I put it back on and the car started much easier. I am not sure if this was the fix, but I am running some errands in a moment as a test run.

ok, so putting the ECU intercooler hose back on did not fix the issue, it actually has gotten worse with some stalling at a stop while in drive.
There really is no issue once I get up to speed, etc. So I tried the fuel pump relay bypass procedure and the car started right up.
My question is, how do I confirm it is just the relay, and not the pump? Fuel rail pressure test?
And I have seen a lot of threads on the jumpers built to repair that issue. Why not just buy a new relay for around $50?

Drive it around for few days with the jumper in place.
If no stalling, then buy a new relay and replace, as you note.

Thanks for the input, there is a 98 V70 at the junkyard, I could grab the relay for around $5.
is this a big no no possibly leading to future fuel pump issues?

I would favor the relay fail over pump by 10:1 odds. I just made that up of course.
Relays almost always fail open and kill voltage and lead to dead circuits, rather than fry things.

The jumper was never meant to be a repair, just a diagnostic "tool". As Steve said, drive around for a while and see if that takes care of your problems. If it does, either repair or replace the fuel pump relay. You can repair the relay in most cases with a couple of dollars worth of Radio Shack parts (I have a writeup in the repair database) or you can replace it.
Most of the auto parts stores will order in the wrong relay when you go to buy it. They call the master fuel system relay the fuel pump relay on the 850s.

Ok, so maybe the jumper wire for the fuel pump relay was not the fix. I thought it started easily, and grabbed a replacement from the junk yard for a few bucks. Problem has not gone away.
The car sat for about 20 minutes after turning it off, pressure at fuel rail = no fuel. Started the car (getting rougher) and ran it for a few minutes, turned it off, waited about a minute and hit the schrader valve on the fuel rail and nothing came out. Seems awfully fast to have nothing squirt out.
Anything else I should do before submitting to the dreaded fuel pump replacement on the AWD (and it stings even more since I am running FWD on the AWD model)?
