1996 850 GLT Radiator Replacement Troubles

Post by shillings55 »

Hello,
I'm in the process of replacing my radiator in my non-turbo right now. Of course a couple bolts snapped and the retaining clips are rusted through so I'll have to replace those, but the two 12mm bolts that hold the radiator in from the bottom are just spinning. They are held at the top with a circular nut that i assume used to be spot welded to the chassis. Well, now they are spinning freely with the bolt and I'm at a loss as to what I should do. There's not much room to drill out or dremel the bolts free but I suppose that's what I'll have to figure how to do...

I've attached an image of the top of the bolt I'm talking about with the freely spinning circular bolt around it.

I believe you have correctly assessed the situation. You might try Dremeling with a thin blade into the side of the circular nut as far as possible and then split it with a chisel to open it enough to break it loose and unscrew. That's probably quicker than sawing off the radiator brackets to get more access and then still having to Dremel. Doesn't look like fun.

Thanks for the quick reply. I like the idea of partially dremeling and then prying with a chisel. What's weird is if you look at the dealer's schematic:

http://www.jimellisvolvoparts.com/showA ... gory=24212

you see they show a bolt and a weird circular bushing going in from the top. I'm not sure what's going on, but I think it's best to dremel it apart in the morning and go from there...

Yeah, that doesn't look right. Looks like they show a screw going in from the top???--not that way on our cars. I think 6a is the rubber grommet.

I had a similar problem in April 2013 when I did my 1999 radiator but I didn't have to Dremel

I'm hoping I put something in the thread because my CRJS syndrome is flaring up.

Shillings, it's way easy to remove the rad from the top on an NA. See Ben McNally's video on FCP site.
Just got to get those two 12mm bolts out first.

Thanks dosbricks, I'm following Ben's video from FCP and plan to pull the assembly up. It's just these two 12mm bolts that are giving me trouble!
