I have decided to go with new fuel filter and in line check valve. If anyone has a solid write up for an AWD with pics for this, I would be most appreciative, if not I will use any advice towards a documented process I do.. I have found a bit of conflicting info on the valves, so if someone could steer me correctly, so I can get some parts ordered.

Based on the following threads, I am unsure which check valve to order

or
https://www.amazon.com/SUR-Auto-Parts-SR ... uctDetails

threads with good instruction..

has anyone ever built the in-line check valve? It looks like most parts are available at lowes/plumbing house but I am unsure about the middle, fuel safe 'check valve'. Not looking to be super cheap, just looking to have this built by the weekend and don't want to wait for the online order.

Or has anyone found a universal check valve in a local store, napa, autozone, etc.?

The second thread that you linked is the one that is germane for your XC. The first thread shows accessing the fuel pump itself through the access plate which doesn't get you to the fuel pump on a XC. As far as the parts go I think that the part number that seems to work is referenced.

I don't know about using plumbing parts for a fuel application. The compression fittings would likely hold and, so long as it doesn't leak, the worst thing that could happen is that it wouldn't work to solve your problem. I've never had to install one and, as such, I would be inclined to follow the recommendation of those who have for name brands and models that seem to work. I'm never one to re-invent the wheel unless I have to.

At the end of the day this isn't a terribly complex system and a check valve usually just involves a ball inside of a tube. So long as it isn't plastic I think any of them would work.

If you do put together some plumbing supply stuff and get it to work please detail it for the benefit of others that find themselves similarly situated.

A small update to the in line check valve. I was unable to locate a fuel safe check valve from local plumbing houses. I did however find another route for locating the part....

If you live near a Napa auto parts, they are getting one in store for me next day, at no extra charge. So approx. $41, which is comparable to online prices without overnite shipping.

Napa P/N - 7306784 - description just says fuel line connector, but I called and confirmed it is 5/16 with a check valve.

Just a wild idea, but my 2000 v70 had the exact same symptoms after being worked on by some really bad mechanics. They had taken out one of the sensors in the air intake that goes to the ETM and forgot to plug it back in. They just left it hanging from the wiring harness. The sensor fits into the top of the inlet air duct that is under the injector rail. Sorry I don;t know what sensor it is, but it is very easy to get to.

Since you had just had an emissions test, maybe the tech took it out for a test and forgot to plug it back into the duct.

So I put the inline check valve in. Rail is holding STRONG pressure. The car won't start, is there too much fuel pressure? Can I back it off? I have the plugs out and they look clean and dry. Can't tell if I have too much fuel or what. Like I said rail has solid pressure. Thanks in advance

I went through the exact same thing a couple of months ago. It blew out the fuel pressure regulator. Replaced it and it worked wonderfully for awhile until I got rid of it.

Thanks Matty, Ozark Lee said I did not have a vacuum fuel pressure regulator. Should I be trying to replace the fuel pressure damper? It sits on the fuel rail and also has a diaphragm? P/N 9186278

She is so close to wanting to start.

I had to leave it and get a ride home. so I will have to address tomorrow unless I need a part and will most likely pay a dealership price for a $50 part to have it that day.

That is what I meant. I just happened to have one laying around at the time.

Thanks again for clarification. The dealers in my area don't even carry the damper, so I now have to place an order. While on the phone, the parts guy tried to help out and ask if I was sure it was not the manifold pressure sensor. Is there a way to check this before I place the order for the damper only?
