2000 v70 X/C cabin fan inop

Post by kahl »

Hi Guys, In my new to me XC the cabin fan does not engage. it worked fine this morning. I have checked the fuses, swapped out the ECC module with no luck. I pulled the cabin sensor and it is clean. This would leave the resistor pack or the fan motor. The fan motor a operated great, no squeaks or weird noise. This leaves me thinking the resistor pack has gone bad. Do these resistor packs just fail with no warning?

This is really uncharted work for me, any insight would be extremely welcome!!!

The first thing I would do is check for power at the fan itself. Then put 12v on the fan to see if it works.

Yes the resistors do fail but usually the fan will still run on the fastest speed.

WTF!!! , Removed electrical connector from fan and I have power, reconnected plug to fan and fan works as normal. Must be some corrosion on one of the plugs.

thank you Richard!!!!

Actually it is not quite that benign but it is usually fixable. The connector on the blower housing, where the wiring harness plugs in, goes into the housing where there are a couple of spade lug terminals. Over time those spade lugs get hot and the terminals get loose, which makes it hotter, which makes the connection looser.......

I have had good success with opening up the case, cleaning the carbon off of the spade lugs, and then crimping the spade lugs a little tighter before I put it back together.

You sure nailed this one Lee. worked this morning and this afternoon it did not operate. I will pull the fan and post some pictures of spade lugs etc.

I pulled out fan and did not see any loose lugs, the plug looked to be seal as part of the motor housing. I cleaned the electrical conecter with contact cleaner and a Q tip. I cleaned off a fair amount of gunk.

That blower is a bit different than the ones I've had apart. Now to think about it, I think the only ones I've been forced to deal with were on the 850s. Sorry I sent you down the wrong road.

No resistor pack on the later P80s with Electronic climate control. It's a transistor pack taking variable current from the control unit.

Mine packed up like this and I finally replaced the fan after three cleanings in as many months

I had this same issue. I pulled a couple from the local PNP and installed a new one. And it worked just fine.
