The hissing could have been a leaking brake servo, if this leaks it lets the engine pull air in to the inlet via the brake servo vac hose which upsets the ECU and can trigger symptoms similar to ETM failure or at least trigger the ETS caption on the dash. As its stopped hissing the vac leak has resealed itself, if it starts again try spraying WD40 in to the area where the actuator rod for the brakes goes through the engine firewall/ bulkhead - Mike

On the ETB cars, if the ECU is reset for any reason, cruise will not work until the ECU either goes through a on-off cycle or some 30 minutes or driving..probably a baseline mapping of fuel/air or something? Observed this on my 1999

Hi, thanks to everyone - the hissing has gone away. I pressed the brake down as far as it would go, released and all seems good. Cruise still working :-)

The car had been stood for a while before I bought it (hence the engine change) so it might have just needed a bit of use to get it to all pull together.

Once again - many thanks
