1996 850 Turbo wagon. What option is this for?

Post by Ben850 »

While changing out the heater core I came across this un used connection taped under the carpet, passengers side at the front of the console.

This was a Florida car originally and came with no winter options, i.e. headlight wipers, heated seats and possibly heated mirrors.
Front passengers side in front of the console.

I am thinking mirrors maybe, but the passengers seat was also non powered.

I installed a powered seat last fall but haven't wired it yet so I haven't searched for connectors for that, but I would imagine finding that under the seat carpeting.

What color are the wires? I can't accurately tell from the picture.

My guess would be for a seat heating pad, either for the front or rear seats. When I installed rear heated seats in my 94 Turbo 850 the plugs under the rear seat bench looked very similar.

My guess would be seat heater. Pull the blank and see if the wire is connected to it.

While refurbishing the interior, I popped out the blanks and installed switches for heated seats, hooking them to the connectors at the console end.
Switches energized, seats...not so much yet.

The drivers seat is still the original, the passengers is heated but non-powered. I had not yet looked for the connections in the car under the seat. I was in a hurry to install the seat. I don't sit there.

There is power to the switches though the seats are not hooked up.

I have the Volvo service manual of wiring schematics hard copy and PDF. I can dig through those I imagine.

So has anyone come across or had to connect this particular circuit?
I haven't had time to test a few things yet. I'm thinking a voltage test while activating switches to start with.

It's not to do with front seats. All three of my 850's have that plug (96 GLT, 96 GLT, 95R). They all have power everything front seats. I side with the people who guessed rear heated seats (none of my 850's have that!).

Also, look at this thread, note how for the S70, all of the power to the rear heated seat section of the harness runs through one little 2-wire, 12V plug:

More good reading:

This would all predict no power to the connector in question if your car has no relay in the 214 position.

That makes sense Eric. The connector is taped over an opening in the sound deadening, likely where the wires would come through from the rear.

Could it be as simple as a lighting socket for an alternate trim model? Check voltage with lights on /off to test theory.
