1993 240 2.3FI AC compressor cycles on/off every few second

Post by behoyt »

I have a 1993 Volvo 240 2.3L FI 4-cylinder with an AC issue. The vehicle has always had a frigid AC which I found strange for the Swedes. Back to topic>>> The compressor "kicks" on/off every few seconds. I charged somewhat with a can of R134a (R134a labeled everywhere on the AC components) in case it was a little low. I had good readings when the compressor was actually running before it "kicked" off again. It is acting just like a '02 Nissan XTerra and '96 Honda Civic I had issues with that had an electronic thermal amplifier that inserted into the fins of the condenser (under the dash).
Before I rip the dash apart, do these cars have a thermal amplifier? Any suggestions on why the compressor kicks on/off continously without giving me cold air?

245,000 miles
"Stored" for 2+ years without running.

From your dash switch, there is an AC delay switch, then a low pressure switch on A/C Accumulator, which senses low vacuum condition...either loss of refrigerant, relay issue, fuse #12 issue, or bad low pressure sensor.

Myself, I'd start at AC delay switch with a voltage logic probe, but I have no idea where it is located. Have you got a schematic?

Compressor can leak refrigerant via front seal...on 93 Volvo, there is a pressure relief valve on back side of compressor.

IMHO you are still low in refrigerant. Id go to a shop and put more in with a regulator gauge. These old compressors you have to have the exact amount, not too low, not too much.
