1994 850 turbo A1 - 322 code

Post by cracker red »

Picked up my first 850 the other day, and trying to sort her out.

Pulled a bunch of codes, some expected due to items that need immediate attention (upper intercooler hose leak), vac lines, etc.

One code that has troubled me is the 322 code. On the test drive the trans behaved fine. Shifted crisply and went into lockup/OD without issue.

Day 2 in the morning the trans seemed to hang in the lower gears, not wanting to shift into OD. I played with the gearshift lever a bit, and after 2-3 minutes it shifted into OD. I thought maybe it was a warm up issue with the car and thought nothing of it. Drive home from work was fine, no issues

Day 3 I get a flashing up arrow. Trans shifts normally but then hangs in OD. I pull off the side of the road, shut the car off, and start searching. Try to restart the car and nothing.

**NOTE - occasionally the shifter will not come out of Park without using the interlock override switch **

That being said, I again messed with the shifter moving it from P to 1st.....thinking perhaps the car thought it was "in gear" and therefore wouldn't start.

Whala....it fired right up like it has the previous dozen drives. No move up light, trans shifter fine no issues.

Is this a PNP problem, a Neutral switch problem, or is the trans just on it's last leg? ODOD is stuck at 75k but based on the registration date(s) best guess is 150k miles. Unknown but I suspect the fluid is old.

If the trans requires R&R a manual will be going in it's place. But I'd like a few months time to gather the parts before I take the car off the road for a week or more.

Thanks! This site is awesome!!!!

Your issues are pretty typical of a PNP problem. Do the reverse lights work?

The PNP is the Park-Neutral-Position switch, although it does tell the TCU what gear is selected on the shifter, and the starter circuit is interrupted when it doesn't make good contact in either park or neutral.

Yes, reverse lights do come on. Tonight...no issues at all. Shifter moves out of park without issue and all shifts are crisp.

I ordered a switch from eEuroparts today....will report back after I install.

Other projects are the timing belt and a PCV kit as well, although those will have to wait until next month.

Curious....when I was fishing around for a way into the center console for some cleaning I pulled off a coin tray....and it has a OBDII looking plug behind it. I plugged in my scanner and whala....it pulls codes.

I thought 94 cars didn't have ODBII or the plug.....

The '94 turbos do have OBD-II but not the NA versions.

I having had time to replace the switch. Pretty sure I've confirmed that it IS the switch. On the way home from work tonight again...no 4th/od. I rested my hand on the shifter and it shifted immediately to 4th. Released pressure on the stick and pop out of 4th into 3rd. Tries it again a few times to confirm...flashing up arrow and CEL shortly after plus car was in 4th and lockup. Reset codes and all is normal again.

Bought new switch which arrived on sat.....didn't want to find the current switch inop and have to have the car down. Will replace and adjust either tomorrow or wed after work and report back.

Well....finally got around to swapping out the switch.

Guess what....nothing. No reverse lights, no start, nothing. I unplugged the MAF, removed the IC hose, airbox, batt tray and battery. Not new at wrenching on cars but this is my first volvo.

Acts like there is no switch there. Won't start, because I'm assuming it can't determine if it's in park or neutral.

Again...no reverse lights come on. Shifter in reverse, cable adjuster loose, PNP switch free and able to rotate....I can wiggle everything in every which direction and nada.

Please help!

It sounds like a faulty switch. I'm assuming you had to tear down the connector in order to replace the switch. As long as it was reassembled and calibrated correctly that connector shouldn't be the issue. How did you calibrate the new switch? My method is to rotate until reverse lights come on and then centre it off the reverse lights.

You can rebuild your old switch with the PNP rebuild thread here. I rebuilt our 850s PNP 3 years ago and no issues.

I agree...and thought it might be the switch as well. I put the old switch back in (without bolting it up, just plugging it in). Rotating it through where R would be (with the car physically in R) didn't get the lights to turn on either (or start).

Can't figure out what I could have missed...but maybe the new switch is bad and the old one gave out?

I opened it up (old switch) and it's all there. I'll see about cleaning it up and reinstalling it. What a pain in the ass this has turned out to be.

Great site!

I figured I had nothing to loose at this point (except another hour) so I took apart what I had. Tar....it must have had tar in it. Cleaned it all out, squirted some dielectric grease in there and popped it back together.

Car is great! Starts in P and N, reverse lights come on and no more holding the damn shifter against the D gate to keep it working correctly.

Now I still have to rebuild the odo, replace the climate control panel, fix the radio and install speakers, replace the suspension, and replace some vac lines. All in time....
