2004 C70 IPD timing belt camshaft hold tool

Post by brick8 »

I am getting ready to change the timing belt on my 2004 C70 HPT. Since it has the variable valve timing hub on the exhaust camshaft I am thinking of purchasing one of the special hold tools that attaches to the back of the engine. Does anyone here know if I use this tool it is still necessary to try to find and align the timing marks on the camshafts and crankshaft?

Here is a link to the tool: http://www.ipdusa.com/products/9735/120 ... cking-tool

If you are simply changing the timing belt it is unnecessary. If you change the front cam seals it is essentially mandatory.

You can deal with the CVVT on your car by rotating the engine by hand, clockwise, to the timing marks. From there continue clockwise an additional 90 degrees and then go back couterclockwise to the timing marks again. This sets the preload on the CVVT hub.

As you thread the new timing belt on just line the sprocket mark back vertically as the belt goes across the CVVT hub on the exhaust camshaft.

Thanks. Do I set the CVVT hub preload before or after I put the new belt on?

I will likely buy this multiple duty kit.
I don't fore see any reason for these tools to break, or not be able to withstand the low torque situations in which they are used.
Inexpensive, as they should be. IPD, almost nothing is priced with budget in mind.

You should set it before. You can do it after but you have to put the belt on twice. If you get it wrong about the worst thing that happens is that you set a P0014 code and the ECU disables the CVVT until the problem is corrected.

Thanks for your advice. Just finished putting it all back together and went for a drive. Really wasn't all that difficult. Hardest part was figuring out how to get the serpentine belt back on. The "new" design tensioner with the t55 hole in it is a lot less user friendly than the serpentine tensioners on my old 850.

Following Ben's post is there any reason not to go with the inexpensive Ebay cam locking tool set?

That is a great price on the tool. I think I paid about $100.00 more than that a couple of years ago for what looks like the same tool. Mine is branded JTC Auto Tools, model JTC-1829, and the case is a fuzz different but the tools themselves look identical.

That tool is totally unnecessary for just a timing belt change but when you need it for something like re-working a head you really do need it.
