+1 on alternator/voltage regulator, you say the lights dim and flare relative to throttle or engine speed, and chances are, if it is starting to fail but not way gone, it wouldn't show on a quickie test at the parts store. The cabling to the alternator would be my second look because increased electrical output may overcome an imperfect connection
