'98 V70R AWD with high mileage should I plunge?

Well I'm still not 100% with all the vacuum hosing but I managed to start the car today and run it home from my friend's workshop. The hydraulic lifters were a little noisy for the first 5 minutes or so (I didn't soak them in oil at all, in fact they had been draining for afew months prior to my ownership so I didn't see the point)

New parts fitted:
Head gasket
20 valve stem seals
Front & rear cam seals
Timing belt (Bando)
Timing belt tensioner pulley (French made SKF)
Rotor arm
Breather box to head pipe
Breather box to inlet pipe
Idler roller (Japanese NSK)
Hydraulic tensioner from my 1993 960 (only had around 20K miles) with 2mm stainless steel spacers
1992 960 GMB water pump without gasket (used Reinzosill sealant)
New turbo to exhaust seal
New NGK spark plugs
New turbo drain pipe to turbo gasket and O ring
New serpentine idler roller
New serpentine tensioner bearing
New torque rod bushing

I'm getting a couple of codes so I need to redo some of the vacuum connections and tighten the MAF pipe to turbo (left it loose) . I missed the all important elbow on the left of the manifold as well.
Also the heater core firewall coupling needs replacement and the electrical ignition switch is playing up.

The good news is the a/c is blowing icy cold

After going over the vacuum routing a 5th time and finally getting it all right I'm getting the following codes:

P0108: Manifold Absolute Pressure/Barometric Pressure Circuit High Input
P0102: Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Low Input

The MAF is reporting no reading at all so I'm about to pull out the meter and measure the outputs to the MAF at the connector. I hope it's no more than a faulty MAF sensor.

Not sure about the 2nd issue, but the barometric circuit sounds familiar. I'll probably be corrected on this, but there is a sensor mounted just in front of the windshield washer bottle on the RH inner wing. I remember having to replace one on an 850. Can't recall the Volvo name for it.

Thanks I'll replace the MAF and see if the other one goes away because today after hitting the MAF it came back to life. The engine died and Torque gave me a reading again on the next start. The voltage is always at the connector however the MAF reading drops out, and did so while driving. When Torque shows the vacuum or boost settings the MAF comes back online with a g/s reading.

The MAF & ignition switch are on their way from Rock Auto and should land on Monday.

The car needs some sorting and has little power with no MAF signal. Also wastegate adjustment is on the list.

The duco is a little wasted and has responded well in the rear quarter to some Meguiars Carnauba so there may be hope for the bonnet.

The brakes lack power and feel either like a hard compound is being used or all the rust pitting on thw discs has reduced their effectiveness. The pads are new, though I haven't even had the wheels off yet to see what brand is fitted.

Also the infamous high mileage dash groans and creaks on smooth roads show me that a repair is imminent.

The AWD system probably needs to be refurbished as the car has loud driveline noise.

Inside everything operates except the radio circuit. I must cut power to the amplifier to see if fuse 7 still blows (the radio which is a SC900 is not drawing excess current when separately powered) I see a large device with heatsinks under the driver's seat. Is this the amp?

Found a genuine blue box cabin filter on Amazon for 41 cents a couple of weeks ago (however postage was $23 so not as dirt cheap as I'd hoped) They actually had 2 of them however the seller emailed to say one was found to be damaged.

The V70R had no cabin filter adapter so I borrowed one from my 2000 V70 and fitted it. Also fitted some loose odds and ends that I left off such as the turbo retaining brackets, the hydraulic tensioner's plastic spacer & the timing belt retaining plate around the crank.

Pads are Bendix which should perform well however discs are pitted with rust and require a light machine.

Yes, the amp is under the seat. The sound system in the T5 is great.

Thanks mecheng it looks like an amp under the seat but wanted to verify before I dive into seat removal.

So Rockauto just sent me an Airtex Wells ignition switch which is apparently a Made In USA product but has a VERY clear VOLVO and W. Germany stamp on it. Hmm VERY INTERESTING. Also it's around $19 cheaper than the blue box item. Make a beeline for this one folks:

Perhaps it was BOXED in the USA.... :wink:

One code down and one to go!! New Bosch MAF eliminated the MAF code. Performance has picked up and I can finally see what all the rage is about with the R/T5 series cars. Now I still have the barometric sensor code. Found a new Bosch 0261230018 on Amazon for $79.34 but will check the connector for output before I order.

Put some 95 octane in and watched her go vroooom :)
