2011 C30 Immobilizer Error Turned Out To Be Bad Battery

Post by Tsquared »

My daughter gave me a call a few days ago because she got the error message about the Immobilizer and her car would start and then immediately shut down. I pulled the quick search from MVS and had her do the lock/unlock cycle 5 times and the error did not come back up and she was able to drive to work.

Yesterday leaving work she received the same message and the unlock/lock procedure did nothing for her. One of her co-workers said he could help and had her pop the hood. There was some corrosion on one of the battery terminals and he used a coke and toothbrush to clean it up. He had to jump it off to get it to start. I found out about this today.

This morning I get the call from her that the immobilizer message was back up and nothing happened when she turned the key. She also told me about what had happened the day before. I had her call AAA to send out their battery replacement unit. It was tested and confirmed that it was a bad battery. I told her to go with their 72 month battery so she shouldn't have any more battery related problems anytime soon. The car is almost 5 years old so it was time for the battery to be replaced.

Has problem been resolved? Volvo's baby their batteries; they usually last ~8 years or so.

The replacement battery corrected the immobilizer issue. The original battery was tested and determined to have a bad cell. The car had been hard to start prior to the immobilizer problem.

The AAA battery died this morning - the same immobilizer error. Their 72 month battery was out of warranty. Not even a pro-rate discount. That AAA battery was not a 72 month but a 40 month battery. My daughter got AAA to jump it off and she drove it to her mechanic. She now has a new battery and a 21 point inspection.
