1994 850 wagon non-turbo
Diagnostic codes 241/314/324
160K Approximate Mileage since odometer stopped years ago
The problem is intermittent. When starting the volvo sometimes starts and runs just fine and sometimes wont start at all. When running, it may run flawlessly and then out of the blue while ideling or driving it dies. If I remember correctly its fairly abrupt. My mechanic is stumped, he's had it for more than a month.
Past maintenance that I have had. 1) New fuel filter, 2) New plugs and Cap, 3) New MAF sensor, 4) Vacuum leaks repaired, 5) EGR cleaning that worked for awhile, but eventually started poping codes so he disconnected the vacuum line to it and it ran great for a few months then started the current intermittent problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I apologize in advance if I posted something incorrectly, I'm a disabled veteran and have some memory/processing issues.
Thanks,
Kevin

Fuel pump relay (most likely) or fuel pump itself, see https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=66238.

Hey what brand was the MAF he put in? If it is not Bosch, that can be a real problem, too.

OK that's the correct part for your 94, should be no issues with a new Bosch part.

If it is a new Bosch MAF I would not necessarily suspect it really, but you can test it.
The basic test of the MAF on these cars will work for a 94: Unplug the MAF, then start the car. Give it a few seconds to stumble until the ECU recognizes there is no MAF and goes into a default mode for air:fuel mixture. The idle should smooth out. Drive the car around for a few hours or a week, the no-MAF condition will be fine, no cross country trips though and it will be running rich so getting mediocre fuel economy. If the problem goes away then the MAF was the cause, if the problem still happens then the MAF is not the issue.
Just turn off the car and plug the MAF back in when you are done. This test will set a code for no MAF (and a check engine light) that must be cleared.
Some cars will not idle correctly without the MAF plugged in, I've never figured out which or why, but if yours is one of those then you can't do the test.

I unplugged the MAF sensor and after the warm up it ran great for about 15 minutes and then died. I then tried it again and drove it for about 50 yards and it again died. So, it looks like the MAF sensor is fine so I'm ordering the fuel pump controller.
Thanks
