Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
That Volvo 75W-90 gear oil is full synthetic and is also the recommended fluid to use in the front bevel gear of the 98'-00's AWD's as well.
+1 Sir, nice write-up. I've telling my other half that I would like to get me either an S70 or V70 with a 5-Speed. I've got my eye out to try and find a 98' so I don't have to worry about the ETS, etc... like on our 00' Cross Country.

Great info! - we don't find too much information regarding preventive service on these manual transmissions. I'm the original owner of a '99 S70 with a manual transmission, having reached 115K miles I find myself with the same question - should I change the oil on the transmission? the car does not show any type of fluid leaks, and the tranny shifts smoothly. I subscribe to the preventive service mentality but there's also the side of "if not broken, don't fix". Question, is there a difference between the drain plug on the right versus the one on the left?

The only drain plugs I am aware of are not on the left or the right but on the top and the bottom. Bottom to drain, top to fill. Just be sure to see if you can get the fill plug out before you drain otherwise you will have a car with no tranny fluid. Also do not over tighten!!! Aluminum on steal=bad deal.
Thanks again - on your first picture, there are three bolts visible, two on each side and on the lower part the assembly, and a larger one in the center, just above the other two - I'm assuming the drain plug is the one on the center, correct?

Yep, don't touch the smaller ones around the edge, just the two big ones. 24mm. It might also behoove you to hit it with some PB Blaster a few hours before you get going. If it hasn't been done before (which is highly likely) it will be on there like stink on poo.
