Strut/spring assembly came out of place?

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Strut/spring assembly came out of place?

Post by rarrieta82 »

Hello All,

I started hearing some thumping sounds from the passenger side of my 2000 Volvo s80 2.9. Then suddenly it started riding weird. I pulled over to inspect it and it looks like the strut came out of the housing unit. Can anybody tell me what to do/purchase in order to fix it? Do I need an entire strut/spring assembly? Or can I get away with strut tower repair cap? Please view pics and please advise. Thank you for all your help.

The whole strut assembly needs to come out, disassembled and inspected. The bare minimum you need would be strut mount and spring seat. I would also put in a new mount washer, mount cup and strut mount fitting. Spring and strut may be OK.

If you do this yourself be advised that the spring could still have a lot of stored energy due to it still being compressed when you take out the two bolts holding the strut mount to the spindle. The repair of the strut assembly is not rocket science any Indy shop should be able to repair. Check out FCPGroton for parts.

That looks tricky. Usually the strut/spring assembly is removed all together, as mentioned above the spring is now under high compression. I wonder how the garage will remove the spring from there? If they pull out the two strut lower bolts, the strut bottom will smash hard into the suspension components.

My 2001 S 80 Volvo had a noise on passenger side when traveling over bump. The replaceable top socket is rubber coded and had worn down to metal after 140,000 miles. Purchased a new one from Volvo parts in Atlanta for $65 ? and local independent shop charged $120 labor to remove and replace.
Volvo parts in Atlanta (1 404 352 3402) sell new and used Volvo parts 30 to 40% less than dealer.

Good luck

Bruce
