1999 s80 misfire no throttle response

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

went out to mess with the coils today and got the CEL again. Codes were:

"current fault P0154-O2 sensor circuit no activity detected bank 2 sensor 1"
"current fault P0036-HO2S heater control circuit bank 1 sensor 2"

Car didn't even have enough power to drive up on ramps had to rev and push at same time to get it up there. I will let the car cool off and crawl under and look at wiring for O2 sensors.

Test wiring leading to O2 sensors. If there are no coil codes leave them be or you will end up creating coil codes by disturbing them (ask me how I know)

I got my DICE and installed VIDA 2014A tonight (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit). I will try it out on the car tomorrow. Only issue I had was with IE11 but VIDA seems to work in Firefox. I am curious about a virtual CD/DVD drive that appeared. Not sure if my Roxio is acting up or if this was created by VIDA?

I initially put the car on ramps, crawled underneath and removed the shield from under the engine and unbolted the front exhaust brace, but I still could not see where the wiring goes for the O2 sensors. I found one of the connectors and it looked good. I got some ramps that are taller and I am hoping if I get the car up higher I will be able to get a better look under there and find the connectors. There is a pretty good oil leak under there (rear main seal) and maybe the O2 connectors are fouled with oil or something simple I hope.

I could never get my DICE/VIDA working....got VIDA to work and the DICE to work with the Volvo driver software but the DICE/VIDA won't talk to each other...

Anyway, I couldn't find anything in the O2 sensor wiring with a visual inspection. Tried running the car and shaking and twisting the wiring harness to see if I could find an intermittent fault....nothing. My father told me his mechanic swore he could fix the car for a reasonable price so I towed it to him. Three days later, he changed the driver side front O2 sensor and told me he couldn't fix the car and I have to take it to the dealer ($200 labor $99 sensor wasted). He said his code reader showed O2 sensors and no communication to the ETM. BTW, I hate "mechanics" that just charge me parts and labor to just go through replacing things hoping they can fix my car without REALLY troubleshooting!!

Took the car to the local, non-dealer, Volvo repair shop. He calls and says the fuse under the hood for the ETM is blown. Replaced the fuse car runs and drives great until you get your foot in it and then the fuse blows again and car runs like poo. Says he also ran the VIDA ETM test and it fails. He says some of the O2 codes could be false positives and we should address the ETM issue first.

He recommended to send the ETM off to BBA Reman to get it rebuilt. I went by and picked up my ETM and called BBA and talked with them today and sent my ETM to them. They do a bench test first for $35 to see if it is rebuildable or complete toast. If they can rebuild mine, it is $250 with a lifetime warranty. They said they change out BOTH Throttle Position Senors with the contactless design (no jumper wires like some other reman shops), and go through the circuit board and check several components and clean it up and they check out the condition and function of the throttle plate. UPS ground shipping was $15 each way and they don't bill me until they complete the job. The local Volvo guy has said he has had good experiences with this company and they even give good support after the job if the unit doesn't function correctly.

So, hopefully in about a week and a half I can get my ETM back and see if this fixes the car.

Glad that someone didn't guess the second time around.

A simple voltage test to the green wire of the ETM loom would have shown a lack of 12V+ supply. Also if the mechanic had listened for the ETM at startup of ignition in PosII he would have heard nothing........it pays to know your product and do the simple, easy tests first.

The ETM may have a binding magnet/armature which causes excess current draw. Usual current draw is 1.8 amps but can reach over 10amps when the magnet rubs and shorts against the armature windings; not a pretty sight.

The aluminium sheathing over the magnet hides the internal corrosion of the magnet which becomes swelled and grows in size to cause the clearance problem.

I've had about 80 ETMs through for repair now and one of them rubbed badly enough that it blew fuses like yours. Only one ETM that came through actually needed 2 sensors to be fitted but that was due to an out of tolerance control board. The jumper lead and only one sensor is used in XeModex installations and as you know they have a sterling reputation. I've read of BBAs reputation which is also very good.

Could you post a photo of the repaired ETM? I'd like to see the 2 contactless sensors because it would require a company other than Sacer to produce the Sensor 1 side. Sacer's catalogue only lists a Sensor 2 side replacement. It would require a redesign of the sensor and the ability of the Sensor 1 sensor to carry the armature wirimg within its design.

Good luck with the repair and keep us posted.

The guy at the reman shop may have not known what he was talking about but we shall see. I specifically asked him about the TPS sensors and he said both and also said they had never seen an ETM so bad it would blow the fuse. He did say he has only been working there for 7 months. The tech who actually works on the unit is supposed to call me once they get the unit and bench test it. I wasn't specifically poking at Xemodex because they were my first choice before the Volvo guy recommended this other place. I believe I had seen on another forum there is also another company besides Xemodex that remans the ETMs with the jumper wire also, so I assumed this was standard procedure and was surprised that BBA said they replace both sensors and for half the price of Xemodex. I hope they come through for the price...

If they're installing two sensors for $250 they need to put another rock in that pipe.

Keep us updated, I'm curious to see if they actually do what they say.

Yeah, I looked at the prices for the sensors last night and I would tend to agree, there is no way they are replacing both for this price. The newb on the phone must not have known what he was talking about.

I got an email this morning at 8:30am that they received my ETM. They just called and got my payment info for the completed repair at 3:15pm the same day. I talked to the girl on the phone and she described the repair and, indeed, it sounds like the standard repair. She said they put a new cover on the wiring harness, replaced the TPS, and put a wire on the circuit board ( I assume the jumper wire). I already received tracking info for the part shipping back to me. Total was $265 including shipping. She said I called on a day they offered free shipping to them so I only paid $15 for shipping back to me! Sweet!

precopster...you were right! They just did the same repair as other shops apparently. I don't really care as long as it works and at least it was almost half the price of XeModex :-)
