My V40 T4 problems
My V40 T4 problems
Hello everybody! I found this forum while searching the net for some help with my V40 and found it very good. I own a V40 T4 model from 1999 but has a 2000 model engine, B4194T2. The first problem is that at low revs, 1000-2000 rpm, the engines "stutters", I replaced the sparkplugs and the problem continued. The second problem is a sound like I have gravel under the car when I press the clutch pedal or when I gear into neutral, but it only happens for a few miles when the car is cold, after 5-10 mins it goes away. Can you give me any idea to what can cause any of those problems? Do you suppose they are linked? Thanks.

With regard to the engine problem have the diagnostic codes read and they will point you in the right direction.
I don't think the two problems are related as you do not say that the engine problem is only when it is cold and goes away after 5-10 mins.
The first thing I would check would be the gearbox oil level.
Bill.

There are no DTC's for the engine, only have a DTC for the elevation sensor of the car alarm. About the gearbox oil level it also crossed my mind. Is there a way for me to check it myself? I would prefer to take care of things tomorrow then wait for Monday. Thanks for the help, it's priceless.

Not having a manual that covers the S/V40 I will point you in the right direction for checking the gearbox oil.
On the side of the gearbox casing, somewhere near the top, there will be an oil filler plug. This is also used for the oil level. Remove the filler plug and the oil should be at the bottom of the hole. If it is not then add some oil slowly until it starts to run out of the hole. This is known as the scientific approach.
On some of the Volvo gearboxes there is a filler plug on each side of the box and I think yours will be one of them. You only need to use one.
If you do need oil it is recommended to use a synthetic manual gearbox oil.

You will only need a little at most. I would go ahead and spring for a quart of whatever the dealer has for your car instead of trying to guess at the correct manual transmission fluid.
