O2 sensor, front. If you don't figure out the source of the unburned fuel -- and soon -- you risk cooking your CAT, which is not an inexpensive replacement, even aftermarket.

It was suggested to me before to hook up real-time data monitoring through the OBD-II connector to check the activity of the O2 sensors. Either a garage or an app like "Torque" with a Bluetooth link. I have an iPhone, so I haven't yet.

I have changed out ignition parts, repaired vacuum lines, changed MAF and aft O2sensor. I averaged 26mpg today on a hundred-mile run of mixed 20% city/80%hwy (losing my drivers CV joints the last 10 miles!) Big improvement from the 15-16 I got a month ago! Still CEL for cat ineff. I have a fwd O2 sensor in hand to put in while I'm changing the driver's axle, doing the rest of the PCV besides vacuum, drain and fill#2, And clean my left front ABS wheel sensor. It's so nice to have my weekend planned!

2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I am trying to find out the source of unburnt fuel, but my front O2 sensor is throwing the P0172 code (system too rich, bank 1). Could a bad sensor throw a code?

It seems to me that the O2 sensor feels the rich mixture and the source should be somewhere else, but I could be wrong...

Repaired my PVC system. The system had garden hose and plastic pipe with no clamps. Huge vacuum leak there. That's all fixed. Replaced the O2 with a new bosch, ($20 ebay), Replaced the MAF with a good used Bosch unit off ebay $25. Put it all back to gether. Now getting 17.5 mpg city vs 14.5 before.
Unfortunately the PO440 small evap leak code showed back up. I think it may be the shut off valve near the canister.
Admission: As soon as that is fixed the car is up for sale. I'll N E V E R ever own another Volvo.

They aren't for everyone but when you get any car that has been hacked, it isn't fun to undo bad work. Unless it's one my 1200cc VW engines where there isn't enough to hack

I'm sure someone thought that was a good cheap mod for the system.

That's what I usually do... find the problems, figure the beast out, fix it so it's running right, then bail on it.

You are complaining and your car had garden hose for the PCV, and you are using $25 MAF sensor used.
When you buy used components, don't expect anything but the unexpected.

The P0440 could be a small tear in a hose, you have to track it down. To speed up the process, get a smoke test done. The fixes for these cars are easy, parts are relatively cheap for a european car, and Volvo got the big things right.

The $25 MAF works as advertized. Nothing wrong with used parts that work.
A smoke test will not detect all problems. To wit: I found that the Canister Purge shut off valve is MISSING. The hose was spliced so smoke would not be escaping to show a problem. But not having the valve there means its open all the time. I'll be installing another used part that was advertized as functional, $35. Beats $135 any day. http://www.ipdusa.com/products/7151/114 ... -off-valve
$135 is another reason to sell the old bat.
Someone will get to purchase a nice repaired and excellent but not perfect V70. I just cannot sell a car that's dicked up.

Anyone happen to have a wiring diagram to the Purge valve? I don't see the connector ANYWHERE. I guess likely that was removed as well. I can build my own harness. Just need to know where it goes.
