Help with general volvo knowledge please.

Post by pate6 »

I am new to the volvo scene. I just got my first volvo about a week ago. And from what im told I got really lucky because I got the turbo 5 speed s70. So I have alot of questions if someone wouldn't mind helping me out. First is the guy I got the car from put a motor from a v70 into the t5. Byt does not know anything about the motor or the donor car other then it was a 2000 v70. How can I go about finding out if its a 2.4 ect. And where can I find the engine code? The only numbers I could find that seemed to be stamped are (9155845, PA6-CF30) thats what I could read at least not 100% sure if it was cf30 or gf30 but to me it looks like cf30. I also have many many other questions but I will just start off with this one for now. Thank you in advance.

As said the number should be on a sticker on the timing belt cover but that may or may not match the engine itself. On an engine swap I did on a '99 XC the donor engine was in a substantial wreck and the cover was broken to pieces so I used the original engine cover. In that case the cover had the same engine model number on it but the serial number was wrong. The covers are interchangeable with no effort at all.

The actual engine number is typically stamped on the block but it can be very difficult to see. Look on the exhaust side of the head at the #1 cylinder. It can be very difficult to tell the difference between the 2.4 LPT and the 2.3 HPT versions just by looking at them.

It is missing part of the timing belt cover so I cannot use that option unfortunately and I will try to check to see if I can find a stamp by cylinder 1 could you give me an example of a number I would be looking for?

Also the wiring harness is jacked up pretty bad so I plan to redo the entire thing with a friend of mine. With the shell being a 99 s70 and the motor being a 2000 v70 what harness do I need to get for the best performance?

And when buying parts should I be searching for 2000 v70 or 99 s70 parts? I did a bit of research and came up with the only difference between a v series and s series is in the body being one is sedan and one is a wagon. Is this true to your knowledge as well.

IPD explains the serial number stamping very clearly.

2000s moved to non hydraulic tappet operation and utilise shims and solid tappets.

The 2000 block has different ribbing on the exhaust side and will be called a B5244T instead of a B5254T if it's a LPT version. Capacity is the same at 2435cc.

The cover for the fuel rail will be plastic on the B5244T instead of aluminium.

Yours is a 1999 and will have a 4 speed auto.

I yield to your more extensive knowledge but I still think they're interchangeable for his purposes

Pretty much that's true. Parts for servicing are pretty alike. It may have a metal canister oil filter on it unless they swapped the cartridge setup over.

Exactly what model of car is this?

Does it say T5 anywhere or GLT?
