2003 V70 DSTC Brake Pressure Sensor #2 Twice 14 months?

Post by afa7afa7 »

2003 V70 with DSTC had Xemodex rebuild Brake Control Module (BCM) in April 2013. Four months later Brake Warning lights and limp mode were back again. Nice people at Xemodex rechecked BCM, seemed fine except code car needs Brake Pressure Sensor #2. After new Brake Pressure Sensor #2 everything was fine for 13 months.

Now problems back again, Brake Warning Lights, Brake Failure Light, limp mode, eventually also Transmission Service needed light. Sent BCM back to Xemodex, plus Engine Control Module and Transmission Control Module. Everything checks out fine except Xemodex again pulls code Brake Pressure Sensor #2 on BCM, which was already replaced 14 months ago.

Before modules went to Xemodex the shop found codes ECM-E000 Control Module Communication Fault, ECM-928C Control Module Communication Problem, ECM-530B Control Module Fault, ECM-9400 Brake Control Module Signal too high/missing, ECM-720A Imobilizer Fault. The shop also pulled PO600 Serial Communication Link Malfunction and U0002 Manufacturer specific code

Any ideas on where to go next? Really wonderful non-Volvo shop checking wiring. When the latest round of Brake warning lights and limp mode started heard a loud thud and then after Check Engine re-set was fine for a month before Brake warning lights and limp mode returned. Single mom and teacher eager to have the wagon working again. Thanks!

You do not explain if the problem occurs all the time or intermittently, but it sounds like an intermittent BCM failure from your symptoms. Perhaps the quick check at Xemodex does not trigger the intermittent problem? Ever tried a different BCM? Just note, they self configure to your car on first install so a used one may have different SW config and will throw a code for that, but if it is otherwise good everything else will go away.

Thanks for the suggestion. The problem is intermittent failure but one that throws the car into limp mode which makes driving difficult.

Part of the difficulty is that DSTC is an option in 2003 and seems rare in that year. The nice guy at Xemodex says the BCM for the cars with DSTC are different. Xemodex was nice enough to rebuild under warranty. Xemodex seems to be on a higher standing above everyone else on these electrical components. The Xemodex DIM rebuild in this car is holding strong, an earlier DIM rebuild by someone else in the US failed and did not have a comparable warranty since I'm not the original owner. As a last option, will see if there is another 2003 BCM for a car with DSTC and everything else matching.

Any other ideas appreciated, the BCM is on its way back from Canada. Thanks!

Update - All electronics and sensors checked, nothing was problematic. Looks like the pump driver of the BCM was replaced. The V70 did also have a torn axle boot and needed a new lower control arm but they didn't think this would set off the brake warning and limp mode intermittently. Over 40 miles now, no lights or limp mode yet. Hopefully it doesn't come back.
