Hey all. Weird issue I'm having.
I want to replace my serp belt. The one thats on there is old and cracking. It is working just fine.
Went to advance auto parts and got the belt they have in stock. Drive-rite. It fit, looked the same (a little smaller) but it was in all the groves etc and then it hopped off and tore up the inside of the belt.
I took it in, thinking it was defective. They refunded me and then sold me the "better" belt by dayco.
This time. I put on the belt. Made sure it was all perfect. Rotated the engine a couple turns from the crank nut, and saw that the belt was starting to come off on the outside of the alternator pulley.
I take the belt off. All the pulleys are rotating smoothly, nothing seized.
Put it back on, rotate it by hand, hops off the alt pulley.
Take the belt off. Put on the old cracked belt. Runs fine, doesn't pop off.
Is there a very specific belt I need, Brand? Anyone else with issues with brand new belts?
Thanks

There was a longer belt introduced after the production year, along with a different belt routing.
I have attached a PDF for the new belt routing - this is probably the belt that you have.

Compare the two belts, old (works) and new (doesn't), are they the same length?
If not, then the parts store should be able to match up the old belt no problem if you bring it in. Dayco makes some good belts, I wouldn't hesitate to do it that way.

Your old belt: groove one side or both sides?
Put the old belt back on for now.
Volvo belt will certainly fit but pricey.
Use eeuroparts dot com, autohausaz dot com etc.
The belt is made by Conti.

You mentioned in an earlier post that the new one was a little smaller. How much smaller are we talking? They should be spot on the same.

The last one I bought at Advance was the proper length for the "Old Style" routing. I think that is what their computer brings up as the "exact fit" part and the kid behind the counter went on tilt when I asked about the alternative routing. I just returned it and bought the correct length from CarQuest. CarQuest is actually a really decent source for Volvo parts since they bought WorldPac.

Thanks for the help. So is the above attached PDF the new routing? That is the routing that I have.
The old belt when I compared it was a little short I'd say less than an inch, but I assume it was normal stretching due to wear.
In the advanceauto exchange they only show 2 belts, and I've tried both of those. Should I just tell them I have a 1999 xcv70 or later to make sure I get the newer belt?

Do they list a length on the belt they are selling you?
