Hi. I have owned this car for 1.5 years and am experiencing a vibrations that makes me think of a bad motor mount. I checked the lower passenger side mount by removing the tire and it looks fine, but I get a vibration when idling. My friend mentioned that the chassis to engine sub frame bushing look kind of worn, but I am skeptical that this will solve the problem. If I keep my foot on the brake and shift between D and R, while slightly revving the motor, I can't see much movement if I watch for the motor to shift with the hood open.
A second problem that I have, that I believe to be unrelated is that I can only run 91 octane gasoline or my engine will "knock" or "ping" upon acceleration. Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Fel

I have had several vibration probs on my 2000 XC - Last one was an ignition coil went bad - but you will get a CEL code for that, Previous time was the lower transmission engine mount ( I also changed the upper mount). Time before that was transmission problem - also get a code for that.
If you don't have have a code I would try the tran engine mount.

Is it a turbo? Then it requires 91 octane. But don't complain, you will get better MPG using 91. On cars that are designed for 87 octane it makes no difference if you use 91 - it's a waste to use it. But on cars that are designed to use 91 you will lower your mpg if you go to regular gas.
For years I refused to put premium fuel in the car because I thought it was a waste - but then I decided to run a test. I alternated 87 octane and 91 octane for four tanks. The extra miles I got from the 91 (I think it was about 50 extra miles per tank) almost exactly offset the extra cost of a fillup. There is an old post about it here on MVS somewhere, with data. I now only use only premium fuel because the car runs much better with it and i know it doesn't really cost any more to use.

It does run better on 91 or 89 octane and I DO get better MPG. I am going to test it out and do the math. Thanks,
-Ben
I'm going to check the tranny mount to see if it is collapsed and causing metal chassis vibration.

Take a closer look at the mount under the crank pulley (passenger or RH end) of the engine. I have had to replace this on all 3 of my recently owned 850/V70 cars. The last one on the 2000 V70R only showed up when the dealer dropped the subframe to do some work. The rubber potion had delaminated from the metal part of the mount.
Ran the 93 850 N/A on 87 around town, but for highway ran it on 91. Turbos I only use 91.
Neil.

I think this is the passenger-side engine mount he was talking about. But you are right - it is very hard to tell if it has collapsed just by looking at it.scot850 wrote:Take a closer look at the mount under the crank pulley (passenger or RH end) of the engine. Thanks. I may take it out and look at it. The symptoms I have really seem like a motor mount to me and it would really make sense that it is bad, so I may look at it again.
The car is non-turbo and the better gas makes the pinging go away. It is the same for around town or highway. It "pings" upon acceleration. With better gas there is no pinging.
Thanks again.
