getting mileage correct after DIM swap...

I'm looking for those are "in the know" on this and not the several different theories around the Volvo sites on how this works! and there are several...

Swapped out the DIM today with the same year...works great but the mileage on screen is the WAY higher reading from the new DIM and not mind. My car has 110K and the used DIM is 170K!!!

I've read all the different theories on how this works with some saying the CEM has the true milage (it has to know the difference), a reset from the dealer is needed, your screwed it cannot be changed, the DIM won't work for the same years w/o a reset, ect. I have the Vida DiCE and cannot see an option to reset this.

The error from the CSC is DIM-0001 Mileage Manipulated. I can reset the error and it doesn't come back but the mileage remains the same.

Can the Vida DiCE do this?
If not what magical tool does the indie and dealer have that the Vida DiCE doesn't?

I do understand the aftermarket VD don't have the ability to download and install software...is this another feature they cannot handle?

The dealer can't modify mileage per anti-tamper laws. The car will have 170 K on it if the key is on for a few minutes or even quicker if it gets speedo signal. The system stores miles in the DIM and the CEM. IF there is a difference in the two values the higher is taken and stored in both places.
The dealer can get tech support if they make a mistake like trying a DIM and the mileage is upwritten through Volvo. It is complicated and expensive and requires a manual database correction and someone will do a remote control read of some hidden files on the car while it is attached to a dealer VIDA pc. If the mileage error is there for long the ability to read the original mileage goes away and they don't take your word for a mileage modification. The law ties their hands.
Basically it sounds like the correct answer is the "you're screwed" one.

Thanks Jimmy, I guess the bummer if I'm reading this all correctly is the CEM and DIM will eventually both be at the higher value now or sooner. I actually was thinking we may trying one of the half ass fixes for the older unit and slap it back in and sell this known good DIM (I got it for free!) but sounds like I'm stuck!

Not to big a fear as I plan on keeping this car until the mileage has little bearing on the cost it will be worth in another 4-5 years!

I'm glad I got a definitive answer and will be sure to correct all those posts I see on other boards in the future...there are lot of different and silly opinions out there on what happens in this situation and how to fix it. I was assuming to much as I read on another post the mileage is in the CEM and this is the final word that will correct a bad DIM...but I guess someone could go to the trouble of swapping out the CEM too if they wanted to be shady.

I recently installed a DIM from the same year car with a lower mileage than my car, and it works fine but still displays the LOWER of the two mileages, AKA the one that the DIM had on it already. I went to the dealership and asked if they could reset it to show correctly and they said they couldn't do anything with mileage due to legal issues. However, they did do a Total CAN Upgrade for me, but that did not remedy the issue. I don't mind the lower mileage being displayed but I am curious as to why it didn't fetch the higher mileage from the CEM. Any ideas?

Because DIM is main module for mileage so CEM only contains nonactive copy.

When I sent my DIM in for repair the company said they couldn't repair it so I sent them another one and they transferred the mileage and info over to the other DIM and I installed it. Had to take it to the dealer to update and activate the "new" DIM but it worked fine with my correct mileage in it.

Dumb question but for 2004 V70 with ~142k miles.

Let's say you buy a new DIM from dealer, does it automatically show ~ 142k miles by itself?

Or dealer has to reprogram it to reflect the current mileage?

The mileage is stored in several modules, PDM,DDM,ECM,CEM, DIM. And yes it is possible for it to be changed.

Doesn't matter if your old Volvo has 250 or 350 thousand miles. No one wants it, so no reason to spend anything on mileage correction.
