1996 850 GLT Sedan Front Passenger side rumble / noise?

Post by Aduzi »

Hello,

Our 96 850 GLT has developed a new noise coming from the passenger side front. It started directly after new tires were put on the front. It is a clunking noise that can be heard when driving over rough terrain. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, I'll be watching for an answer.

Thanks again

Here are my thoughts, in order of likelihood:
(1) the sway bar end link on that side is either worn out or loose
(2) there is something worn out in the strut tower, like the strut bearing or possibly the spring seat
(3) a bad control arm bushing or tie rod (but these don't usually clunk)

However none of those are messed with when you get new tires. Unless, did they align the front end? It could be coincidence or it could be something else. Get a good look around in the area, if possible with the tire off. The end links are easy to inspect and pull on with the tire off.

erikv11,

Thanks for the reply. Do you think this requires immediate attention?

Oh, one thing that clunks when you mess with the tires is if the lug nuts are not tightened all the way! That would require immediate attention, do you have a lug wrench you can check them with?

The three things I mentioned do not require immediate attention. For example a clunky sway bar end link poses no danger at all, you can drive like that forever, but it will bother you. If it is only over bumps, and is not getting worse, then it probably does not require immediate attention. But I wouldn't wait long, at least to find out what it is. Then you know if you can wait to fix it (you usually can).

+1 With the above recommendations.

The problem with waiting to fix noisy things or CEL is that the current problem will hide new problems. Example, if you ignore a CEL due to a bad rear o2 sensor, you will not know when a new code is set. Some people drive around with a CEL and when the car stops running, they find out that there are 6 codes in the system. So, try to fix it as soon as you can.

Thanks again erikv11,

Would an alignment be needed after fixing any of these possible problems? In other words should it be taken to a mechanic or would it be better to take it into an alignment shop?
