On the design principle, the reason the OUTER boot has larger bellows is b/c it flexes more (wheel going up and down and turning right and left all the time) than the INNER boot.
Having said that, one can use the OUTER for INNER for N/A models. At least this was what I found out during my DIY.

@Northerlights (how does someone from Florida have that name LOL): I ordered through Pelican, shipping wasn't too bad. I went all out and ordered 3 so I don't have to worry about looking up part numbers when I forget all of this in the future, and the shipping cost didn't change.northernlights wrote:There is definitely a difference between the GKN/Lobro parts and the generic aftermarket. That's why I took some time to try and figure out how to make the GKN parts work! I hope Pelican ships to Canada, as I think you will like the parts. If not use the part number for an Ebay search and you should find something. I suspect the part number I provided is the OEM Audi number or something similar.
The aftermarket stuff does seem less substantial, plus there are visual differences in the internal features where the boots clamp over the shaft and CV joint. It's one of these things where they look mostly the same, but because they are copies the small details are different.
Same thing with respect to materials. Who knows how appropriate the choice of the boot elastomer is with the generic stuff, if the grease they provide is fully compatible with it and lubricates a CV joint as it should, etc. You will notice that the GKN boots come with GKN grease, not some random wagon-wheel stuff!
Those details are the things that GKN/Lobro probably spent a bunch of time and money engineering, and I have to believe that they know more about it than the companies trying to clone their products in the same factory that might also make toasters.
I will use the Rein for the inner as I am doing the work this weekend on the 850. I will use the GKN when it arrives on the S70. When it rains it pours, both cars have failed CV boots. The Rein doesn't look like a bad boot, it is Made in Italy, grease from Germany but the GKN looks better: it is thicker and the rubber has a more supple feel. For the inner it hopefully is good enough, I won't use it on the outer as per CN90's experience. The Rein kit does not include the nut, the GKN does, and it is no difference in price basically.... go figure.
I agree completely, I'd much rather use an inner boot where it belongs. If you look at the 2nd bellows on the inner, at the same location on the outer boot it doesn't have this feature and may rub against the CV internal parts. Same thinking at other locations through its length.
Thanks again, and good work.
@CN90: Yes I was going to buy the dealer part, but the dealer part cost in Canada is a lot more than aftermarket and MERICA. They wanted $60 for one boot. I paid $60 for GKN 3 boots shipped from Pelican. (Ok, I get a 13% discount because I'm a likeable guy but still) They are only $9 each. Stop screwing us Volvo Canada if you are reading.

I found this on partsgeek.com which I have noted to be a reliable jobber in the past. What you think?? Es OK??

I was inspecting this morning--outers are getting small cracks but inners look OK, but when going to all this trouble better to change both considering the mileage on the S70 and since this is a big hassle and don't want to repeat any time soon.

The top part number (-1781) looks right visually, but it would be good to check a catalog to see if the dimensions are correct. The Quattro ones have that funny flange and the dimensions are a bit different, so I'd almost certainly say no to that.dosbricks wrote:I found this on partsgeek.com which I have noted to be a reliable jobber in the past. Did both boots on an NA yesterday afternoon, using the part numbers in the original post of this thread, one GKN outer and one GKN inner. The job went well and the parts fit perfectly. Sourced both parts from AutoHausAz.
The inner boot comes with 160g of grease (2 packets at 80g each), the outer with 80g and an axle nut. I used about 140 on the inner and the rest on the outer.

My head was spinning after reading all the input on this thread. I'm ok with the outer CV boot for my 97 850 NA auto, but did we come to a final conclusion on the inner CV boot from GKN Lobro part #?
I contacted FCP and they only supply the outer for the auto and only have the manual for the inner. Question, what are the measurements for the manual inner v's auto?
Thanks,
Neil.
