2015 XC60 Drive E Oil Leak

Post by ctrobk »

Just in case anyone runs into an oil leak. I thought I post some info I learned from the dealer today regarding an oil leak on a 2015 XC60 Drive E. Probably applicable to V60 and S60.

I noticed my new car (now 7k on the odometer) was leaking oil. My first thought was pan drain plug or filter housing even though they hadn't been touched. Once I got under there I could tell the leak was coming from somewhere higher in the engine, most likely a seal from one of the shafts.

Dealer examined the car and determined it was the cam gear vvt plugs. He said Volvo was aware of the issue on the Drive E platform. There was a production issue for a certain period of time at a certain factory (he didn't elaborate). Volvo shipped all the dealers the replacement seals/plugs so the dealer had the part in stock.

There seems to be a TSB issued, TJ 29131

The CVVT hub bolt covers on that engine are not threaded and torqued as before. They are turned in like a bulb socket but do have Torx fastener in order to rotate them. I don't know if the changed part is due to a dimensional or a material difference.

What is your MPG in that vehicle with the new powertrain?

Not as good as I thought it would be. I am averaging around 24mpg. However, I do live in area with lots of hills, with probably a mix of 70/30 local/highway. I just took a 100 mile road trip and averaged 28mpg. I have never achieved the 31mpg listed.
The autostop function takes a bit getting used to but I really like the idea of it. Eco mode is not default, you have to remember to activate it every time you start the car. With the Eco mode display it helps you drive more efficiently. There is a bar graph with the actual mpg's and when you are doing everything right, an "E" pops up. Overall we are happy with it.

These mpg's are about what I was getting with my 03 V70 base.
