1996 Volvo 850 Turbo - Engine Swap

Post by WhiteWagon396 »

Looking to swap engines from one 850 Turbo to another. Have both cars sitting side by side.

What is the best way to swap engines? Should I swap the transmissions while I am at it? What is the best method? Take out from above, drop everything from below?

If anyone has a list of steps to take, what to remove, disconnect, etc, it would be greatly appreciated.

Are any special tools needed?

Appreciate any advise from those who have done this.

Thank you,

Top with no tranny. If the tranny is good, that might be a little easier but no room to lift out.

I've done it a couple times, I like to take the whole thing in and out the top, with the trans connected to the engine. Very straightforward that way.

Described in excellent detail here for a non-turbo:

There are a ton of threads here about engine swaps, I suggest you do some searches and read up on the few differences for a turbo car. In the great majority of the posts you will find people pull the engine and transmission together, in part because it is much easier for a novice to separate them once they are out of the car, but there are also a few posts describing how to first separate them in the vehicle.

Here is one of those, scroll to the long post from jimmy75, it is a bit tough to follow but that's because it is very thorough:

I like to drop engine with trans out the bottom along with the subframe. But I have access to a body lift.
