98 C70 Water out of exhaust, strong strange smell

Post by Volvich »

Hi, I had an overheating problem which is solved by now. But now I'm getting whitish smoke that has a strong strange smell. Also there's water dripping from exhaust pipe that is somewhat oily.
Is this a sign of blown head gasket? :?
A little background: my thermostat failed in closed position which caused the heater core to leak. Changed both. Also changed the coolant temp sensor. At this point I have the heater core bypassed since the coupler at the firewall leaks. I was planning to eliminate the coupler and connect with heater hoses straight to heater core pipes. Not anymore if the head gasket is blown...

If it is a somewhat sweet smell, it's the sour prospect of a blown head gasket indeed.

It smelled more like a paint. Or maybe like a paint solvent I should say. Not sure how to describe it.
I can't say it's a sweet smell though. More of a sharp smell.
You could definitely tell it's something that wasn't supposed to be there and burn.

That's coolant. Check the level and see if its dropping slowly to confirm

Yep, forgot to mention, coolant level was normal, did not notice level drop while engine was running. But shortly after shutting down the engine reservoir was empty.
Does that mean the car is done? I have heard there are some additives for this. How effective are they?

Also check the color of the transmission fluid. Sometimes the engine coolant can leak inside the transmission fluid via a crack inside the radiator where the transmission fluid passes to be cooled.

Engine coolant can also leak inside the cabin heater - look underneath floor mats for wet.

Lots of water from the muffler also means cheap gasoline, try using another gas station.

Sounds like a badly blown head gasket. The magic in a can probably won't help with this degree of problem although you could try Steal Seal if you feel like gambling. The quickest way to test for a blown headgasket is to either buy a kit that can look for exhaust fumes in the radiator overflow (Auto Zone etc) or you could have an inspection station stick its exhaust probe in the overflow tank to check for exhaust fumes. Either way, overheating nearly always leads to a blown head gasket in this and any aluminum head motor. Good Luck

Volvich, I'm going to quote you from your previous thread about fog on the windows and subsequent heater core blowing.
"Well, after I posted here I went for a test drive... not the smartest decision.. Everything looked fine, but then Temp gauge started going up and white smoke started filling the cabin..."

I hate to say it, but I thought at the time that your cylinder head was probably toast--just didn't want to pronounce bad news without positive proof. These Volvos just can't run in an overheated condition. :(
