Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

99 S80 T6 emission light is on and car is runnig rough

Post by Spin »

I am new here and from the posts I have seen I have already diagnosed about 3 problems with my car, this place is absolutely fantastic. I recently had my Transmission rebuilt by a couple of monkeys and since then my car has not been right. I was just driving it last night when out of no where it started running rough. The emission light came on in the display and the check engine light came on and flashes every few seconds. I am taking a guess that my cat is clogged or begining to become clogged. I noticed a burning smell also not like any oil or fluid. I am going to rent a code reader and I will post the codes here in a little while. Question is am I on the right track and is it possible for the cat to become clogged so quickly?

Thanks :(

All good information but you didn't say how many miles are on your car. So, some guys rebuilt your transmission...this right? I've never heard of a transmission on these cars being rebuilt...or that someone is even able to...usually these are just replaced. Tell us more of what was going on to have to need your transmission rebuilt and what part was actually done.

Sorry,

The car only has 89k miles. When I bought it it had a whining noise in the trans. The Volvo dealership told me it was probably the Main gear going and it would eventually need replaced. Problem was the car had an aftermarket warranty and the warranty company only allowed rebuilding not replacement. So I was stuck. It took them approx. the length of 1 month to get it right and it stayed that way for a short period of time. It is currently slipping gears at low RPMs and doesn't shift smoothly or on time in the manual shift. I am guessing it is the torque converter agian and for some reason this keeps getting fried. It is on the repair company to fix it. The warrany company screwed me so I paid the $1,700 for the rebuild, which should have taken care of these symptoms. Since I have got the car back it has had a clunking noise in the front end, but thanks to the sites database I found it is the subframe o rings ( which the trans co removed to take the trans out). This car is way to nice to let fall apart like this. I am renting a code reader today. From what I have noticed this car seems hard to read do to the computer set up, but I will figure it out. I will post them this afternoon.

Thanks

My first thoughts are that the "guys" put the wrong ATF in your transmission. I know that several different ones were used in these cars...GM tranny even on some models. Aisin Warner on others. Check your owner's manual and it will tell what kind of fluid it's suppose to have. If you get the wrong fluid, you'll have lock-ups, rough shifting and no shifting at all...and it will eventually FUBAR your transmission. After you check your manual, call the guys and ask them what ATF they used...don't let on that you know...just let them answer you. Anyway, good luck...you may be in for another transmission- this time a swap is my suggestion and not a "rebuild," as I've never heard of a rebuild to be successful unless it's just changing a solenoid out or something fairly simple.
