1998 S70 Leaking red fluid (Man Trans)

Hi Everyone,

This is a rookie question. Is manual transmission fluid the same color as automatic transmission fluid? I haven't owned a manual transmission without my dad being around, and I have no idea what color the tranny fluid in a stick.

I'm trying to figure out what type of fluid my car is leaking, its cherry red and greasy just like AT fluid. Could it be brake fluid or old power steering? The new power steering fluid is green.

Manual transmission gear oil usually isn't red, and leaks are rare too.

My guess is its power steering fluid. Can you find the leak source?

Take the car to a car wash and use a pressure wash hose to carefully clean off the underside of the engine and trans. Do NOT get water onto the distributor!!

Or just wipe the area where the leak is with an old cloth, and take some pictures as best you can. We may be able to point you in the right direction.

Power steering fluid should be RED(since it's an atf fluid)...not green.

Why not check your owner's manual and see what kind of fluid is recommended?
My 740 used ATF in the manual gearbox and I suspect a S70 does as well.

Manual trans fluid should also be red as it is an ATF type of fluid

If you ever see Green PS Fluid, it is Pentosin CHF-11S used in newer Volvos.
But it can be used in older Volvos too.
