'98 S70 GLT Trouble with staying running...

Post by francisp »

I have a '98 S70 GLT with 133k on the clock. I am having issues with it staying running. Once I place it into gear, it sputters and dies out. Could it be the furl pump? The vehicle will start and stay running but idle is rough. Previously, I discovered one of the engine mounts failed and the car now vibrates as I drive along and when I come to a stop, the front end vibrates. Any thoughts on these issues is greatly appreciated.

At 133K miles, always start with the basic:
- Air Filter
- Fuel Filter
- Spark Plugs
- Cap/Rotor
- Bougicord

Once those items are taken care of, then it is easier to work your way through the driveability issues.

Many Thanks, cn90. I was planning on replacing the "usual suspects". I'll update you as to my progress.

Also as this is a turbo (?), take a close look at all the vacuum pipes. Chances these will be waiting to bite you too.

+1 to cn90 (of course) when you pull the distributor cap, check for oil/condition of seal, sensuous in there anyway!
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

OK, so after replacing the spark plugs with original Volvo plugs and all the other pertinent items I ordered from FCP, the car starts up without hesitation. However, since I diagnosed it to have bad motor mounts prior to the tune up, it has gotten progressively worse and the CEL is now flashing. So, I shut it off and put it back in the garage and went online to research the flashing CEL. Any ideas? I am getting a bit frustrated and I am thinking of selling it off. :?

The flashing CEL indicates a misfire. Get the codes read to see which cylinder(s), go from there, could be a bad plug or wire, or just a bad connection.

I've had that issue with two '96 850's at different times.
The first one (non-turbo) turned out to be a hole in the flex hose that was on the back and under side, so not visible. That one caused some backfiring and then would barely run and then wouldn't run at all. The hole was allowing unmetered air into the throttle body. A nice simple fix once I discovered it.

More recently, on a '96 850 turbo model, the engine had been running fine, but suddenly lost power and was really erratic. I was able to keep it running by jiggling the accelerator, but barely made it home. I discovered one of the hose clamps from the intercooler was loose. The hose actually separated from the flange, so that was a major leak. Again, a nice simple fix once I discovered it.

My question is are you sure on getting the firing order correct? You didn't have a flashing check engine light before...Sometimes plugs can get cracked too especially if it went through so many hands shipping...once you have that ascertained you might be back to where you started with off throttle issues which to me sounds like a air induction problem loose split turbo hose just like jimbee stated....faulty mass air flow meter etc...
