You can also get speakers from the rear position on the 850 wagons... some of them came fitted with speakers that are the same size as the dash speakers, but they don't get as much sun exposure as the dash speakers do. I've had pretty good luck finding them and harvesting them at the junkyard.

Maybe. I installed Infinity 3012CF coaxial speakers and there was a tad more depth room but not much - maybe 1/4" or 3/8". If the Pioneer speakers aren't substantially deeper they should fit just fine.
You won't be able to use the factory mounting scheme but you can just use a short bolt and a nut.

Do I need a new head unit / amp just to get a better sound from Alpine tweeters? I have a stock premium sound system w/o the factory amp. I ask because I'm considering upgrading all of the speakers in my wagon.

If you have something like a SC-815 now you will get some improvement but it will never sound like it should. Other than the SC-901 the other head units have a God awful ghetto bump in the equalization at around 80 Hz that you can't adjust out. The SC-901 must have the factory amp behind it to work.firestarterpro wrote:Do I need a new head unit / amp just to get a better sound from Alpine tweeters? There are many better head units out there but making them look right is the trick, even a standard double DIN unit won't fit exactly right. If you do replace the head unit with a single DIN unit avoid the Metra and get a Scosche installation kit, it holds up much better.

reviving this:
wanted to update the audio system for a long time but never really wanted to mess too much with custom mounting. I decided to go ahead now since I found these speakers:
for the dash and boot: Faital 2FE24
https://faitalpro.com/en/products/LF_Lo ... d=40900010
https://audioxpress.com/article/faitalp ... full-range
(from vparts, for the doors, next step I will do)
M225 https://dls.se/product/m225/
Faital 2FE24 are the main reason I finally wanted to do it. They seemed a near perfect fit for the original speakers. They are just a bit wider, but you can trim the plastic casing down a bit, 2-3mm overall an then they are pretty much plug and play. I used an orbital sander, a belt sander probably would be best.
Now keep in mind I am not an audio guy, so maybe this is not the best idea, I don't know (shrugs)
I am not using the original Volvo radio, but an aftermarket 1 Din unit from Alpine. I also physically removed the amp that was below the heater core and I'm pretty sure it was dead anyways.
They are full range, but drop off below 200hz. Online calculators suggested to use 100uF caps to exclude those frequencies. The originals from Volvo won't match that, so I used Panasonic FC-A 100uF.
Initial test suggest they work fine, and there is a big improvement. What I like best, is that I can reuse the brilliant mounting system the volvo engineers used, so aside from trimming the speakers and a bit of modification to the mounts this was nearly plug and play
Note I used some glue on the fronts since the clips don't do much with the larger holes. If it dows not hold up I'll use m4 screws like on the rears. Rears were too thic to use the original clips.
