engine cuts out on '96 Volvo 850 Turbo

Post by IanB »

I have a '96 Turbo with about 120,000 miles. I have had it for a year with no problems. Last week, however, the engine began cutting out for no apparent reason. It always starts again. Sometimes it runs well after that, other times it will continue to cut out every few minutes to the point I am afraid to take it any distance. Any ideas? It has also been extremely cold here the past couple weeks- could that have anything to do with this?

Thanks for the help.

Did you check your codes? Engine light on? Even if it's not on, you could have a code or two.

PO172 Long term fuel trim, lower limit
P0440 Evaporative emission system (EVAP Valve) leakage

I wouldn't be surprised if the P0440 caused the P0172. Could be as simple as a loose gas cap. Tighten it a couple of clicks and see if that does it. If not, the gas cap gasket could be bad or you have something more going on with the EVAP System. Try the simple stuff first and then report back.

Do you know how to clear your codes?

I would not expect either one of these to cause an engine to die?

Check your vacumn lines. One of them may have a small crack or tear. Also check for dirty or loose battery cables. When was your last tune-up?
