1995 T-5R Black.

Post by Ben850 » Wed Jun 25, 2014 7:33 pm

I will take delivery of this next week from an MVS member here in Michigan. He had posted it here in the classifieds.

This will be my third 850, second Sedan, and first true R model.

The car has been in an accident and the air bags were deployed. it is a very similar accident to the one in which my '93 Sedan was.

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... d&start=14

The impact was significant on the unibody of my '93. If the impact would have been a couple inches in either direction, other than the exact spot where the bumpersupport beam is connected to the unibody it would have been a complete mess.
The '93 is documented here.

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 35&t=47157

The 1995 Black 850 T-5R had an impact in almost the same spot, but not nearly as hard. I have only the pictures to judge that at this point, But the header panel was not destroyed and the radiator did not break.
The car was also drivable after the accident.

With all that in mind, this should be an easier revival than the White 1993 GLT Sedan.

I was just about ready for another project since the wagon is coming along great.

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 35&t=56550

So, it begins again next week. It will soon join the line-up.

The car was delivered today. It was a pleasure doing business with forum member WhiteX.

After getting an up close look at the damage, it seems like deja vu.

It is almost the exact accident as my '93 Sedan but not quite as much damage.
There will be some unibody straightening, but not as severe.

Luckily, I have already invested in the hydraulic tools for pulling and pushing with great force. I have also learned much from the experience.

Day One: Inspect, clean, dismantle. Part one.

So it begins. I took it for a drive like this after replacing a broken purge valve to the EVAP canister.
The previous owner installed a passive blow off valve which startled me at first after boosting.
IMG_2975.JPG
I looked at the turbo and noticed the compressor side appearing to be possibly an upgraded size, but I will have to take a closer look tomorrow.
It runs well as far as I can tell and the boost came on strong, but I barely opened it up. I will wait until I change all the fluids, which do not look good.

Great junk yard find last week.

Picked up:

* Black hood.
* Front bumper complete. Black, not R. Will repair R valence.
* SRS sensor.
* Header panel.
* Right front fender Black.
* Hood hinges Black.

Approximately $193.00 for all.

I have many parts in storage for the revival.

This is a good start being the first trip to the yards.

Short update. collected many parts to include,

SRS airbag computer module.
Dash pad with airbag.
Black hood.
Hood hinges.
Right front fender, black.
Header panel.
Both headlights.
Left and right seat belts.
Steering wheel air bag.
Steering wheel clock spring.
Glove box w/door and latch.
Left headlight wiper motor.
Headlight trim pieces.
Complete bumper for support rail and impact foam.

There are more small nut and bolt parts I have on hand in storage.

Began frame straightening. I am in no rush, so small measured increments leading to a few sturdy pulls to bring everything bumper related approximately 3" to the left.

Though the damage looks severe, it is limited structurally to the uni-body.

The subframe and bushings were not affected. The hit seems to have been directly to the corner of the bumper at about a 45 degree angle, pushing the bumper mounting points approximately four inches to the right ( Drivers, or "Stage-Right").

The car is drivable, unlike my '93 after its accident which tore open the radiator tank at the mounting point.
Steering is straight and unaffected. Assuming it was straight to begin with.

This car has been altered with an external blow off valve, and it is quick. As much as I can tell in the neighborhood without causing too much of a danger, or nuisance.

After removing the fenders and header panel with all the light and wiper fixtures, I mounted the salvaged hood and hinges (un-bent) to start the visual assessment.

Having done a primary frame pull at the bumper mounting point, (approx. 3 inches forward), I hung an un-bent bumper frame to calculate the adjustments to come.

I got a deal on a 10-ton ram pulling kit like the 4-ton kit in the photos. It is two and a quarter times as strong. The adjustments can be made quicker and easier than my initial learning curve on the '93.

Last week I was playing around, listening to the blow off valve open and shut for a while with a few revs in neutral. When I was done having my fun, I noticed the idle get rough before shutting it off and hoping I didn't blow a gasket.
Today was the first chance I'd had to play with the car since. I went for vacuum leaks first off. It took about two minutes of listening and feeling around to find a blown out hose at the throttle body, next to the IAC tube.

Fortunately, I had the silicone tube left over from my FCP kit when I went with the 3" throttle body mod. on the wagon.

The wagon is next in line. Saturday, it gets new heater hoses. They are the only part of the cooling system lines I did not replace. One blew last week a half mile from home.
The needle didn't move, and I glided with the engine off for the last block. Fingers crossed.

The wagon took me from Ohio to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, across the Mackinac Bridge and back without issue the week before. If it had to blow somewhere, I was fortunate.

A Durango shows up. I guess the owner of the house is also allowed to use his driveway.

I received this amazing wealth of information from the U.K. today.

I had used less detailed diagrams when I pulled the '93 into shape. The detail and subjects covered in this manual are going to make things much easier.

I've acquired some tools that were not on hand for my '93.
Have parts coming together. Another junk yard run this Sunday.

Once it goes on jack stands, people will know where to find me.

I will attempt to follow through with some repairs, weather permitting.

For the time being, it will stay under cover.

I will put it on jack stands and remove the "Titan" wheels to clean them up.

Another one is on the way. I will open another thread for the new (to me) S60 coming soon.

The new one did not turn out to be an S60, but a V70 XC cross country.

Oh, the reason for posting again is a new set of Titans that I may apply to the '96 in the spring.
No "R" stamped on these rims.
They are not Pegasus.

They are original 1995 T-5R Titans.
I feel fortunate to have Two sets of these rims, and one of the original vehicle.
