2000 v70xc (215k) decisions, decisions..what to do???

Post by mrscullini »

trying to decide whether to repair or part out. exhaust valves crashed into the pistons. all pistons are dinged and all valves are bent. below are a couple of pics.

first time i have experienced this type of failure, a few questions;

1. not going to pull the motor to replace pistons, how will it run with scars on the pistons?
2. what are the chances there is damage to the rods and/or rings?
3. what are the chances there is damage to the valve guides?

replaced a burned valve a couple years ago at the 175k mark. i'm estimating this job will be about $1500 to replace all valves, t-belt, water pump etc. not sure i want to dump more $$$ into the car.

thoughts??? opinions???

You don't need to pull the engine to replace pistons....you can do it from underneath, through crankcase.
2.it will reveal when you remove crankcase
3.since you allready removed head...inspect them

I guess this was a timing belt failure.Usually...lower half of the engine remain good and all you need to do is to replace the head and gasket...or to rebuild the head.

thanks misha. i'll definitely need to rebuild the head, all the valves are bent.

with the pistons in this condition, would they normally be replaced? obviously, that would substantially add to the cost of the repair.

the timing belt didn't break, but it must have jumped. the crazy thing is that the crank and cam timing marks are aligned. could the belt have jumped, caused the crash and then jumped back upon impact?

Something in the timing path had to have failed. Was the belt loose?

I would not worry about the pistons or lower end unless a crack could be seen in one of them. At this point, you have accumulated some cost in getting it this far. Double check with your mechanic, you may be 1/4 of the way there and from here you may only have about $1,200 cost remaining.

i've done all the tear down work, so no hard dollars accumulated as of yet. if i repair, i will do all the reassembly work. i did this 40k ago when i burned a valve. at that time i replaced all the timing components and it has been running fine since.

the belt did appear to be a little loose based on the tensioner indicator.

It's mechanical.I heard that they must be replaced at EVERY timing belt replacement on these cars.
It failed from age or you didn't check it's tension last time you replaced timing belt.Maybe it's still ok but had or have unproper tension setting.

thanks, i know it must be replaced with every t-belt replacement. it was replaced 40k miles ago along with all the timing items (belt, idler, water pump). this was done when the head was off due to a burned valve. i have replaced multiple t-belts on these motors and i am quite familiar with the procedure for tensioning.

It can be two cases....tensioner failed or it hasn't been set to a proper tension.

What is the brand of the tensioner?

Oem or aftermarket?
