Re: '99 V70 Key Needed
$18 for a cut key is great. Best I've ever seen was $13 but you also had to pay shipping (Superior Volvo of KC, now closed).

Got my 2 '98-style non-chipped keys at the dealer this morning. I had one cut, took it out to the parking lot for testing and when it worked, I had a second cut. Jimmy is quite correct that orientation will be critical. The non-chipped keys worked when I held the spare key up to the column in a certain way, but not in another couple ways. Proximity is key (pun intended) and I will try test fitting with tape before resorting to any more permanent fixing if the chipped key. Parts guys was intrigued and incredulous as to what I was attempting when I explained it to him.
Maybe they ought to wise up instead and realize their isn't a high call for anti-theft protections on a 15 year old car and start making the chipped replacement keys affordable. The Wall Street saying has some meaning here -- "You can be a bull, or a bear, but don't be a pig."
If I get ambitious, I may post a couple pics of the whole operation. The lowering steering column shroud mounting bosses were destroyed by a prior hack (not by me) into the steering column to fit a remote start and I already repaired them with epoxy. I'll have to see if that repair holds up.

Does the chip or method (taping to column sounds great) produce battery drainage? Maybe insignificant...
Would removing and replacing the battery cables result in any challenges while in place?
I don't think so but... just asking.

No battery drain, the radio chip (same as what a vet imbeds under your dog's skin. I think my golden retriever is trying to figure out how to get his programmed to car annd all the ones in the keys erased....) contains a winding of wire that the antenna ring magnetic pulses will induce a current through. The chip then broadcasts signal the antenna ring picks up. The only time the immobilizer module (or CEM on other models) does the key recognition is when you first turn on ignition.
Putting the key there is no different than leaving the key in the ignition all the time.

You should be able to extract the chip from the key and hide that near the sensor much more easily.

When playing with external key positioning, I did notice that after the car was running if you took the chipped key away from the ignition area, the engine will die. This could be an important consideration since if you don't secure the key or chip properly you could stall out in traffic.
