only have part rotation of engine- no start
only have part rotation of engine- no start
engine will not rotate 360 degrees. I need ideas of things to check. The car is a USA 1989 245, 2.3 gas, non turbo, automatic transmission. Odometer has 184K miles showing. But with odometer breakage problems with these cars, true miles is not known. I plan to remove starter and check ring gear, flexplate and from there to dropping oil pan. Is there something else I need to check? Thanks, JC

Not very likely as it is a non-interference engine. If not you might just be hitting the valves with the pistons
Is this only when you are trying to start it or does it also happen when you try to rotate the engine by hand? Can you hear any noises that may indicate something is fouling the works?engine will not rotate 360 degrees

Bill, once engine reaches limit of rotation all the starter will do is make a
thump sound. I am able to rotate engine by hand in counter rotation.
After I did some checking in the Bentley 240 Service Manual I hope it is nothing more than a flexplate bolt or bolts have come loose. The manual
states to use locking compound on these bolts. Joe

That sounds a possibility.
I believe in using locking compound on just about everything. It is so inexpensive and can save a great deal of future trouble and expense.
