She waited longer (over a year, the finally bought a new Lexus, but didn't want to part with the "R", because she loved driving the car...but when my Mercury lost a bearing on the crank, she offered it up, (with streaming tears, i must add...Sher really did love the car)
So, when I bought the car, the base coat was pretty much gone, with grey factory primer showing through, and lots of new bubbling. South Texas Sun, no garage ever in its life..poor little "R"
.
Had I the money (which I don't), I'd have the whole car professionally re-sprayed, and all the door dings, etc. taken out...but I don't...I cannot even afford the $700.00 best price I could get for the tops of the fenders, the hood, the roof, and the trunk.
A brush job would look batter than the way it is now!! So, after mulling it over, I am going to paint the blistered areas (after driveway prepping) and the hood, roof, etc. Flat Black...doing the best I can in my driveway. I have painted a few cars, and know how to do it 'properly', but this is going to be a $50.00 job, or its not going to happen. John Deere Blitz Black, with Hardener and Reducer.
The sides of the car, although they have their 15 years/176,000 miles of dings, still look good, and "going down the road" are what you will see.
Any replies about how "it should be done" keep in mind the $50.00 qualifier in your reply.
The car has not been sanded in these pictures. the solid black is basecoat, the grey is primer....those scratches are where I got careless when flaking off the clear with a box cutter blade (which really worked well to flip it off rather quickly). I tried Craigslist for guys who paint cars at home, etc,...no luck. I even seriously considered Plasti Dip, and did a whole side roof section to test, but didn't care for it, so peeled it back off (that stuff is amazing!)... I did do my peeling aluminum roof strips with it, however.
