So... looking at an 2005 S60R stick with 131k... priced right but the airbag light is on. Here's the explanation.... seller says he took out the battery and replaced it and that's when the light came on. Says the dealer needs to reset it and it should be quick and easy. I think if it's that easy he'd just take it and have it done.
Thoughts?
thanks!

Makes no sense whatsoever.
If you like the car make sure the light is out and the SRS system is good before you buy it and also make sure he just does not remove the light (which is quite easy to do and cheap to do)

Indeed, that is not the reason the light came on. The light might mean two different things. First, there could be an issue with the airbag system, anything from a wire under the seat, to the airbag itself. Car has been in an accident?
The other much more common reason, the light comes on when someone plays with the instrument cluster, or with the radio (an aftermarket radio can cause it), or any other electrical. The light comes on and it must be reset at the dealer indeed.
Best is to go with the car at the dealer to reset the light. If it does comes back on, then there is either a problem with the wiring or with the airbag system itself.

This is a Mercedes problem where if you disconnect the battery and get an SRS light. NOT a Volvo problem.
It is suggestive of an SRS module problem if you disconnect battery and get an SRS message.

Wow... glad I asked. Looks like this could be a much bigger issue than I had thought. I might .... I emphasize might... be able to scan the car with Vida... I've got access to a scanner and have downloaded the VMware image, but I've never used it... so it might be awkward to be 'learning' the system on this guy's car. Maybe I should walk from this one. It's been offered at $5650... not bad at all for an 05 at 131k...

If you have a Dice interface tool as well as Vida just clear it. Without Dice, Vida is of no use.

Right.. with Dice... never having used one, I can't remember which is the scanner and which is the software. Anyway... how much is the SRS module ballpark, if that's what it needs, and how hard is it to change.... something a novice can do?

I would imagine it's expensive like afew hundred. They're usually located somewhere under the centre console. You have a Vida software so it's easy to enter your chassis number and take a look in the parts listing. Once you have a number take a look at Tasca's website for an idea of cost.
I doubt you can pull one from another car as like most modules in these cars they are program matched.
In terms of complexity to remove and replace it seems to be a very rare repair so I can't recall anyone doing this lately on MVS. Once the console's removed it should be pretty straight forward. Always disconnect battery before working on SRS components of course! !

There are several sensors, you need to scan the car.
Don't start thinking what's wrong with it until you get the code
