2002 v70 Diesel cranking but not starting in the cold

Hi Merry Christmas to you all - I am new here and have a problem with a recently purchased Volvo V70 D5
2002 model still under warranty from the garage that I purchased it from its been back for this problem the engine is cranking ok but in the cold will not fire or start - once started its fine until its been left overnight - the garage told me it was a faulty injector that they replaced but really its still the same it let me down Christmas day, and ive only just got it going by spraying easy start into the air filter, I know that I must take it back to the garage but as I am able to do some jobs would like to know if its a big problem to fix I was told it also recently had new glow plugs - thanks for any help/guidance

We don't get this engine choice in the States, so folks on EU are your best bet

1. New glow plugs will not fix a faulty controller that does not power up the glow plugs or does not power them up so that the plugs actually heat.
2. Cranking speed is critical for cold start (but overly fast cranking when cold is sign of a another issue see #3).
3.A cold compression test may be needed. If there is ring and cylinder wear you can have enough compression loss that it will not start without aids but will be fine when cold. Issues with wear that cause cold starting problems may not result in excess oil consumption.

Hi thanks for your quick reply do you refer to the glow plug relay when talking of controller? the glow plug dash indicatior stays on for about 5 seconds from cold -I dont think its Cranking to fast seems about right to me - but yes a cold compression test may give an indication of problems here

How cold are you talking, I once had an Audi 200 diesel and in sunny Florida my fuel gelled in the cold. I thought it was the battery and went through a couple as I killed them. The problem with ether (quick start) is that you will end up losing your ring seal if you rely on it. If it is cold enough that the car wont start, wait, or get a gas car for those days. Or a fuel heater.
