1989 740 GL starts up then dies

Post by ordinaryboy1986 »

starts up just fine. sounds good. few seconds later it dies. doesn't struggle or feel like its out of gas. it just cuts out. after it started fine then cut out i would try and start again and it would turn over but nothing. let it sit for a few minutes. starts up. cuts out.

this is what ive done.

new fuel pump, new fuel filter, ignition module, radio noise relay, new fuses, ignition coil, cleaned MAF and i think thats about it. i just located and removed the crankshaft sensor. i cleaned it and looked for damage. a big rip in the exterior rubber but the wires seem fine. put it back in tightened it up and it started the same. also tried to start it without the sensor and it was a no start so not sure. if anyone can help me out that would be great. i am going to get a new crankshaft sensor tomorrow and give it try. this is killing me!

thanks everyone!

Wiggle key switch...

Otherwise, hook test light up to coil's positive side, and another test light to GRN-RED wire at Radio Suppression Relay. Having someone start vehicle, and with both eyes, let each eye watch each test light.

wiggled key switch and it started up a little longer than normal but still died. i am a little hesitant to replace the crankshaft ignition sensor. around 60 dollars. unless someone thinks that will fix the problem. i dont have a light test. might as well go pick one up. the check engine light comes on just before it dies. also i disassembled the fuel rail and injectors. plenty of gas in the rail. injectors are really dirty but the tips of the injectors are clean. does anyone think new fuel injectors would help my car stay running??

Hang in there, these guys are working on your problem. Test lights can be had from Harbor Freight for around $5.

replaced the crankshaft ignition sensor today. noticed a lot of gunk build up where the sensor vertically locks into. tried my best to clean it all out. car started up better then normal and ran longer but still shut off. well for me i did what i could. i really dont know what else it could be. i dont want to let her go but if i cant fix her soon i gotta call pick a part to come pick her up. least someone will score some great parts haha.

fuel pressure regulator. i started my car late tonight when it was quiet out and could kinda hear maybe a leak after the car died. i pulled the vacuum line off the fpr and could smell gas. thinking maybe a new fpr could help? car maybe running too lean. anyone thinks this is a good idea let me know. its just really frustrating being so close. ive changed so many things and still not getting better. but at least its not getting worse.

Have you checked the fuel pump relay? It's a common breaking point that causes all sorts of inexplicable issues on these cars.

On the 240 it is located behind the fabric under the glove box. You can pop off its plastic housing to take a look at the solder points and see whether they're broken or corroded.

Speaking of corrosion, are your grounds clean?

Other things to check: the connections at your distributor, coil, and alternator.

Rent a pressure gauge from an auto parts store and check your fuel pressure.

ive also replaced the fuel pump relay :(

with all the things ive taken off the grounds looked fine. all the connections dont have broken wires .

gonna check my fuel pressure today. if i need a new FPR i will put one in. but its so frustrating doing all this stuff and the car runs then just shuts off. after the fpr i give up.
