1998 s70 brake issues

Post by cghost88 »

I have a 1998 s70 with ~115,000 miles on it. A few months ago I replaced all 4 disk brakes with little trouble. The first couple of weeks the brakes squealed on stops, but I thought that was normal for new brakes. Well after a few months went by, the problem still persists today. Furthermore, my "ABS" and "Trac-Off" dash light comes on and off every so often. I've changed brakes on other cars before with no problems, just never a volvo. Is there any steps that are volvo specific when installing brake pads? Has anyone else had this problem?

Did you use OEM pads with the special brake grease on their backs and on the caliper pistons? If not, your brakes will probably squeak. In regards to the ABS, this is quite common. Sounds like your ABS control module is going out. Mine did last year and Victor rebuilt mine for about $140 and I've had no issue since then. http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/

What kind of pads did you use?

It seems that anything but OEM pads tend to squeal but the OEM pads are very dirty. I think Luketrash used Mintek pads with good results but anything from Parts America / AutoZone / O'Reilly / Advance is going to squeal for life.

Luketrash used Mintek pads with good results
For more years than I care to remember I have used nothing but Mintex pads and, on cars with rear drum brakes, Mintex shoes. I have always coated the backs of the pads with a copper based grease and have never had squeal from any car.

In addition to the potential problem being the ABS module; one (or more) of the wheel speed sensors may be failing. I had one of mine replaced and it cost $160 (right rear wheel).

Very possible, but not a typical issue with our cars... I've been on these boards for several years and I think you're the second person I've heard say this was a problem with their car... Almost everyone who's replaced or had their ABS module repaired has gotten rid of their ABS/TRACS problems.

True, I also had to have the module replaced. However, before replacing the module, it would be a good idea to make sure the problem can't be solved by replacing a sensor. The mechanic I use told me it is identifiable through the use of the diagnostic analyzer.
